Khaangchu Rongmei Community School in Manipur Reimagines Learning

Under the shade of a tall tree in a remote Rongmei village in Manipur, children measure shadows with their bodies and argue over angles in their own language - and in doing so, reveal what education looks like when it finally stops asking children to disappear. Kabithui Rongmei, who spent his childhood moving from place to place just to find a school that would have him, and Ananya Mukherjee, who saw inequity even in well-resourced city classrooms, co-founded Khaangchu Education Centre together - not as outsiders offering solutions, but as people willing to listen first. As Kabithui observed, "When children cannot see their world in what they are learning, education slowly loses meaning for them." What Khaangchu has quietly restored is not just literacy or attendance - it is the sense that a child's identity is something to build upon, not set aside. The community built the school with their own hands, elders step in as teachers, and children who once wouldn't speak now stand up and say exactly what they think - which may be the most honest measure of what learning is for.
