What I Found When I Scanned the Brains of Kids Creating Tunes on the Piano

When neuroscientist Karen Barrett scanned the brains of children improvising music for the first time, she expected to find something rudimentary - instead, she found something revealing. The children's brains lit up in reward centers more strongly than those of trained jazz musicians, suggesting that creativity isn't a skill layered onto the brain through practice, but something closer to a birthright. Barrett describes the fMRI data as capturing "the beginner's mind," showing that the capacity to create exists before expertise, before confidence, before anyone has had the chance to talk themselves out of it.
