Lt Shivani Jha’s Inspiring Journey From a Spinal Injury to Becoming a Soldier

In a small town in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, a mother repeated the same sentence so often it stopped sounding like a wish - and her daughter spent years making it true. Lt. Shivani Jha cleared corporate interviews, weathered repeated rejections from the Services Selection Board, and kept preparing in the hours before and after work, never taking a drop year, never letting the accumulating "no's" settle into permanence. When a spinal fracture during an SSB attempt in 2023 left her on bed rest for three months, her parents became her caregivers without once raising the question of stopping. "I was sure I wouldn't stop trying until my very last attempt," she says - and there is something in that quiet certainty, held not in spite of the setbacks but somehow deepened by them, that speaks to what conviction actually looks like from the inside. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army in September 2025, Shivani's story is less about triumph than about the kind of faith that doesn't require guarantees - in something greater, and in oneself.
