When 82-year-old educator Padmini arrived at the Kombai tribal settlements in Tamil Nadu, she brought not textbooks but nail cutters - understanding that dignity must be taught before grammar can take root. Her "School on Wheels" programme, which began on Saturdays in 2024, now reaches more than 50 first-generation learners, including parents who sit beside their children learning alphabets and multiplication tables for the first time. One elderly man, likely in his 80s, approached a teacher and asked to learn to write his own name; letter by letter, "Pandy" appeared on the blackboard. Padmini, who still walks into a classroom daily, holds to a conviction she has carried across six decades of teaching: "The person who becomes a sweeper should be the best sweeper" - because excellence belongs to every life, not only those that follow a familiar path. As one mother put it, "as a family that comes from nothing, we can finally dream again."
