At 54 years old, a chimpanzee named Pierre had gone completely blind - and the team at Chimp Haven, the world's largest chimpanzee sanctuary, spent months preparing him for cataract surgery not just by planning the procedure, but by teaching him, while still sightless, to voluntarily present his eyes for care. The results arrived almost immediately: within hours he was responding to a familiar face, and within days he was reuniting with Jill, one of his closest companions.
