Five times a day, without fail, mosque loudspeakers across Indonesia call hundreds of millions of people to prayer - and a team of researchers now believes that same voice could call them to safety. Dr. Inoue Hiroshi's insight was simple and quietly powerful: "The advantage of a mosque speaker is that they're existing and well maintained... the mosque speaker is maintained by the people." When phone networks fail under the stress of an earthquake, what remains is what communities have already chosen to sustain. The project also confronts a harder truth - that survival advice written for well-built buildings can kill people in poorly constructed ones - and insists on developing guidance grounded in how Indonesian homes actually fail. It is a vision of disaster preparedness built not on new technology imposed from outside, but on trust that was already there.
