The Farmer Growing a Future Under Ghana’s Trees

Every morning, Susana Afrifa Ankrah wakes in her compound in Ghana's Atewa Range, looks out at the trees surrounding her home, and feels happy - a small, quietly radical act in a world where forests are more often seen as obstacles to income than sources of it. Through the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme, she and other community leaders have learned to farm in ways that protect the ancient forest while dramatically improving their yields, with Susana reporting an 80% increase in earnings that has allowed her to open a daycare nursery and a bakery employing 17 workers. "The forest gives us fresh air," she explains. "It cools the land. It helps the rains to fall. And if the rains are falling, then the crops will do well and we know everything will be fine." Her story offers something rarer than a conservation success: evidence that when people who have lived alongside a landscape for generations are trusted as its stewards rather than treated as its threat, both the land and the community can begin to heal together. Sixteen grandchildren now come to help on the farm after school, and Susana sees, in their small hands among the cocoa plants, the outlines of a future worth protecting.
