Reasons To Be Cheerful · 15 hours ago
When a young conductor realized that climate activism had run out of roads, he didn't march or petition - he picked up his baton. Étienne Jarrier co-founded Paris's Orchestre du Nouveau Monde to bring classical music into the streets, schools, and disadvantaged neighborhoods where it rarely goes, using beauty as a kind of strategy: "Music is like a Trojan horse for us," he says. "We get our foot in the door with the music, and then when there is an opening we talk about what we care about." What the orchestra has discovered is something older than protest itself - that shared feeling precedes shared understanding, and that a string quartet on a doorstep can open what a flyer never could. In a political moment defined by hardened positions and exhausted arguments, these musicians are betting on vulnerability as the one thing that still travels across difference.
