When Bharati Mudi was 16, her community threatened to boycott her family if she kept playing football in shorts - and so she stopped, carrying that unfinished dream for decades. Then her daughter wanted to play, and Bharati walked back onto the field in a saree, coaching from memory and instinct, making every session free because she knew exactly what it felt like to be kept out by forces beyond her control. Today, 18 of her tribal girls have gone on to represent West Bengal, some competing at the national level - proof that she has given others what was once taken from her. She teaches them, as she puts it, that "their village, background or financial circumstances need not limit their dreams" - words that carry the particular weight of someone who lived the cost of that lesson first.
