The Shadow Side of Meditation

Meditation has long been sold as a refuge from difficulty - but a team of researchers at the Center for Healthy Minds suggests the harder truth may be more useful. In this conversation from Dharma Lab, neuroscientist Richard Davidson, contemplative scholar Cortland Dahl, and colleagues examine what the science actually shows when people report anxiety, sadness, or distress during meditation practice. Their randomized trial data consistently fails to find evidence that meditation causes harm - and in many cases suggests it may be protective - yet roughly 30% of participants in digital meditation programs do report difficult experiences they attribute to the practice. What emerges from the research is a quieter, more honest picture: that a difficult session is not the same as a harmful one, and that what we expect meditation to do shapes almost everything about how we experience it. As researcher Matt Hirshberg observes, "if your motivation is to not feel sad, and you believe meditation should be the absence of sadness, and you experience sadness in meditation, then your subjective experience of that is going to be very different than someone who feels like, 'My motivation is to train the mind and develop equanimity.'" The deeper finding may be this: when participants were asked directly what helped them through hard moments in practice, what shone through, in Polina Beloborodova's words, was "the resilience and the amount of self-kindness and self-compassion" - not the absence of struggle, but a learned willingness to meet it.
