더그 이튼은 6월 11일 자신의 생일을 성대하게 축하 하고 싶어 친구들에게 아이디어를 구했고 , 결국 지나가는 사람들에게 돈을 나눠주는 등 뜻밖의 선행 으로 생일을 기념했습니다.

"페이스북에서 친구들에게 65번째 생일에 뭘 하면 좋을지 물어봤더니 정말 많은 아이디어를 받았어요."라고 그는 KFOR-TV에 말했다 . "그런데 한 친구가 '65번 무작위로 선행을 베풀어 보는 건 어때?'라고 제안했죠."

그래서 그는 실제로 그렇게 했습니다. 오클라호마 시티의 북서 39번가와 메이 애비뉴 모퉁이에 65분 동안 서서 지나가는 사람들에게 5달러짜리 지폐를 나눠줬습니다. 그는 페이스북 친구들에게 375달러 이상을 나눠줬다고 말했지만, 사람들의 반응과 그가 나눠준 따뜻한 마음은 돈으로 환산할 수 없다고 했습니다.

멀리서 보면 이튼은 길거리에서 팻말을 들고 구걸하는 여느 거지와 다를 바 없어 보였다. 하지만 돈을 구걸하는 대신, 그의 팻말에는 "저는 집도 있고, 차도 있고, 직장도 있습니다. 커피값으로 몇 달러만 필요하신가요?"라고 적혀 있었다.

어떤 사람들은 그의 표지판을 제대로 읽은 건지 의아해하며 몇 번씩 차를 몰고 지나갔습니다. 그가 돈을 건네주자 많은 사람들이 "믿을 수 없어" 또는 "감사합니다"라고 중얼거렸습니다. 어떤 사람들은 돈을 받기를 꺼려했고, 그는 "괜찮아요, 그냥 감사의 표시예요"라고 말하며 이것이 자신의 특별한 생일을 기념하는 방법이라고 설명해야 했습니다. 그는 페이스북 친구들에게 "처음에 오해했던 한 트럭에 탄 가족이 두 번째로 와서 제가 하는 일에 감사하는 의미로 2달러를 주었어요."라고 전했습니다 . 이튼은 방송국과의 인터뷰에서 "정말 환상적인 경험이었어요."라고 말하며, "돈을 받지 않는 사람들 중에는 '당신이 하는 일이 정말 멋지네요. 저는 받지 않겠지만, 도움이 필요한 다른 사람에게 주실 수 있을까요?'라고 묻는 사람들도 있어요."라고 덧붙였다.

이튼의 생일 아이디어는 2010년 38번째 생일을 맞아 38가지의 무작위 선행을 실천하고 가족과 친구들에게 동참을 요청했던 로빈 보마의 사례에서 영감을 받았습니다.

"혹시 몰라서 38가지 계획을 미리 세웠지만, 사실은 하루 종일 좋은 기회가 생기기를 간절히 바랐어요." 그녀는 자신의 블로그 ' 믹스 밍글 글로우' 에 이렇게 썼습니다 . "남편과 세 딸, 그리고 시부모님까지 함께해서 제 인생 최고의 생일을 보냈답니다!"

그녀는 쏟아진 응원에 크게 감동하여 특별한 날을 기념하며 행운을 다른 사람에게 나누어주는 온라인 커뮤니티인 ' 생일 프로젝트'를 시작했습니다.

이튼이 65분 동안 돈을 나눠준 것만이 그의 하루 동안의 유일한 선행은 아니었습니다. 그가 페이스북에 올린 메모에 따르면, 그는 12달러짜리 이발에 50달러를 내고 1.09달러짜리 커피에 10달러를 지불하면서 "잔돈은 가지세요"라고 말했고, 동네 식당에서 여러 사람의 점심을 사주고, 낯선 사람과 그의 딸에게 버스비를 주는 등 여러 가지 선행을 베풀었습니다.

그는 페이스북 친구들에게 "오늘은 제 최근 삶에서 가장 큰 축복 중 하나였습니다."라고 말했습니다. "다음 생일까지 기다렸다가 다시 이렇게 할 수 있을지 모르겠네요. 하지만 이게 습관이 된다면 어떨까요? 아니면 모든 사람, 혹은 많은 사람들이 생일에 생일만큼의 무작위 선행을 한다면 어떨까요? 얼마나 멋진 일이 될까요?"

HI, I love this, thank you for sharing!I don't always have cash to share, however, I do share acts of kindness whenever possible.I celebrate my Birthday & several other holidays organizing and sharing Free Hugs all over the world with anyone who wants one. I've never received a bad hug. Yes, I Hug homeless people. When someone smiles and tells you, they had not been hugged in 20 years, that impacts you. People share the most intimate details of their lives in the moment. People share about job losses, death of spouses, insecurities. The Most powerful hug I ever received was from a severely autistic boy in Paris. He saw us out of the corner of his eye and asked his mother what we were doing. To our relief, she did not say we were crazy, she said, "They are hugging people, it's beautiful." And soon they were gone. Wow....I really needed this story today in view of the tragic events in my homestate. It also took me back a few weeks to when I flew back east and surprised my niece for her 11th birthday. It was the BEST birthday I ever had....and it wasn't even mine. Keep the positive stories flowing!

This gives me something to think about for my next birthday. For the last two birthdays (I always throw myself a party), folks were asked to bring canned goods for the local food pantry rather than gifts for me. It has been a huge success and I will continue the tradition.
