Frankly the whole "spirit of silence" is so vague. Any matter can be deemed important and thus entail opening a can of worms.
You walk down the street, and an average man says "Hi!" and if you don't reply you'd feel guilty and think it's rude. But the moment you reply, he'd smarmily strike a convo and ask you for money and before you know it he'll be feeding his heroin habit.
Quit being holy. STOP being holy and holier-than-thou. The reason you want to be holy is precisely the reason you are not.
For instance, the mailman could easily have said: "Have you heard of the fire down the street?"
You entertain cuz it will be quote unquote rude not to reply. And then he carries on: "Yeah man, I hate fire. Once a cat died in my fire. It belonged to my ex. Damn that b--- was a psycho. PURE narcissistic personality disorders. Orders food from Walmart doesn't eat ...man the c--- takes me to Arby's and I paid 100$ the other day and she wasted the food. Can you believe it? The ----in ---- WASTED the food. And I actually needed that to pay off my debts for casino. Man.. oh you got a lighter?"
Instead. Had you not entertained him, he'd have stopped dead in his track. Sure he might have considered you rude. But down the road he'd have got the message that he talks too much and way too needlessly.
Sometimes it is not only important and pertinent but NECESSARY to be rude for other people's awakening. Quit being holy as I said. Because that is just another form of game. Another form of charade. The Zen monks use something called 'katsu' for awakening. Is that rude?
