Why Activism Must Be More Generous
Oct 24, 2018-- Frances Lee, activist, writer, designer and public scholar in Seattle, Washington, believes that social justice movements have a narrow framework of morality, which is counterproductive. Movements need a critical mass of people, but now activists are expected to follow specific standards to be trusted and heard by the larger group. Frances argues that social justice activists must be as committed to rooting out unhealthy behaviors inside themselves as they are in society. They advise prioritizing building healthy relationships within and with others and accepting people wherever they are on the journey of activism. One internal quality to cultivate is compassion. In addition to rage and critique, nurture humility and gentleness. In this way, we honor our full humanity and that of others, including our enemies and oppressors. (8129 reads)
