There was a couple in my city who did something similar a few years ago. It was a Meetup group called "Insightful Palate Dinner and Discussion", where everyone who RSVPed would bring a vegetarian dish to share with the others. The hosts organized these dinner events once a month, always with a social, political or philosphical theme to be discussed. The conversations were always interesting and it was fun to discover new foods and different opinions every time. Nothing weird ever happened, so I think it's just a matter of finding a way to attract the type of people you want to your dinner for it to be successful.
