Mother to 40 Special Children

Mother to 40 Special Children
Rachel Wheeler-Rossow is a remarkable woman and mother to 40 special children in a family that has caught the hearts and imaginations of the world around her. Yes, 40 children. Three are biological and the rest are children by virtue of adoption and foster care, most of whom were born with severe physical and mental disabilities. But then, Wheeler-Rossow's definition of special maintains that labels like "disabled" and "adopted" are blinders that prevent from truly seeing people. "I've always thought -- and I still think -- that children are children are children. Why would we want to limit how we see children with adjectives -- like handicapped or mentally retarded?" Her generous spirit moved the Governor Ella Grasso of Connecticut so much that she sold the Governor's airplane to help Wheeler-Rossow build a home more suited to the needs of her unique family.
