Teaching the "Healer's Art"

“The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention…. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words.” Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen believes that listening is good medicine, and she has developed a training program that changes the way doctors practice their "healing art." Her course is now taught in half the medical schools in the United States.

Reflections (1)

Richard Loftus, M.D.
I took Bubbe Rachel's class at UCSF in 1998 and I agree that Listening, with a capital L, is what she teaches. Rachel has also created an organization for graduates, Finding Meaning in Medicine, to help medical providers avoid burnout and remember our values while working in the medical system. Her example has inspired me in my doctoring everywhere I have practiced.
