Deafcity Hub and the Fight to Build a Space Where Sign Language Can Live and Thrive | the Optimist Daily

Across the entire United Kingdom, with 18 million people living with some degree of hearing loss, there is not a single permanent cultural center built for and by the Deaf community - a gap that urban planner and activist Amanprit Arnold has spent years sitting with and is now determined to close. Her DeafCity Hub campaign seeks to create a building designed from the ground up around DeafSpace principles, where wide corridors allow two people to walk and sign simultaneously, lighting is soft enough to read faces across a room, and seating curves so that no one's hands disappear from view. These are not accommodations bolted on after the fact; they are the basic conditions for a conversation. Arnold, who was born deaf and advises city planners on accessibility through her design agency Disability Urbanism, draws on the concept of "Deaf Gain" - the understanding that deafness is not a deficit to be corrected but a perspective that brings something genuinely different into the world - and she is clear about what's at stake: "Most communities have their own spaces. I think creating DeafCity Hub as a deaf-owned and deaf-led arts space would assert that our culture is also rich." With a year in a temporary London space secured through Westminster City Council, and the original 1986 blueprints for a Deaf cultural center that never got built still in her possession, Arnold is making the case that visibility in the media and belonging in the built environment are not the same thing.
