As a Narrative Therapy Practitioner and Storyteller, I 100% agree with and support the need for more civil conversations and seeking to understand varying perspectives. In Narrative Therapy we are curious about the many external impacts which influence how we view ourselves, others and the world. We are interested in unpacking how these external messages from family of origin, cultural/gender/societal norms, religion, school, politics, systems and structures impact our belief systems. Context is so important; it deeply impacts why we believe what we believe. Being able to compassionately engage in conversation to unpack the why and seek to understand rather than judge goes a long way in building bridges between. I will acknowledge in today's political climate it is getting much harder to do as so many people are so quick to become defensive rather than curious or compassionated. As a Storyteller, once we know each other's stories, we are able to hold more care for each other. <3
