Mindfulness is always mindfulness of something. It’s not something to be turned on or off . Mindfulness is not a pill you can get from the chemist. It is a daily practice. In the book The heart of the Buddha’s teaching , author Thich Nhat Hanh talks about Right Mindfulness as “ the energy that brings us to the present moment” I think it is helpful to look at mindfulness as one aspect of the 8 fold path rather than a separate therapy or solution. Mindfulness is to be with what is actually going on rather than an escape from suffering.
It is part of a wider practice and not a solution unto itself . It is wonderful that mindfulness is being introduced to teenagers as a way of understanding themselves. I think however that it needs to be taught as part of the 8 fold path. As part of a daily practice of self discipline and self discovery.
