I had a very similar experience after a motorcycle accident that should have killed me but I was able to walk away from. I had angels stop to see if I was ok, too, and they had the same expression you describe. I was bleeding a lot, but nothing critical and it looked much worse than it was. My injuries were limited to a fractured toe and severe road rash. Still a brutal recovery, but the things I learned from the crash and recovery are priceless.
I will say, it can be hard to maintain that new heart. I may have lost some of it since then, but I always look back to that day as a reminder that I need to stay true to what matters.
