I appreciate and honor this guidance. But how generously should we listen when the person speaking expresses racism or hate in any other form or promotes harm against another being or the planet? I need to hear more on this subject.

In my experience, there is a kind of sincere dialogue that starts with curiosity so there are questions that invite people beyond the hate filled statements to what they really are concerned about and what they fear. The hate filled language is not their truth but a learned reflex. The generous listening creates a space for the underlying fear or anger or grief to begin to emerge. It is not a “one and done” magic wand — but an appreciation that some people have not felt safe enough to get in touch with what they really care about.
