What a beautiful reminder of the goodness and love that lives within each of us, and the importance of nurturing it and sharing it. As a teacher, I have often reminded myself that my students are going to remember how I made them feel long after they have forgotten the curriculum I delivered. From 4 years old to 21, every student I have ever taught has responded in ways big and small to loving and consistent kindness.

It was an eighth-grade English teacher, Mrs. Wagner, who lovingly pointed me toward my eventual career as a writer. My mom was a first-grade teacher and she, along with my dad, raised me to treat others with dignity and compassion. I will always hold teachers in the highest regard. Thank you, Anita, for teaching our young people the most important lesson of all: that love is the driving force behind human survival.
