I saw the proliferation of these negatives early on in the social media phenomenon. I "escaped" facebook, and really all social media many years ago, and have never looked back. I may be biased by being one those who have, according to this article, committed virtual suicide (which is patently absurd to me), but I can only see positives in my life by not participating in the ridiculousness that inevitably comes from facebook and its ilk. I can maintain contact with those close to me and others without it. Ya know... like we did for hundreds and thousands of years prior to it. I am not discounting the ease of doing so provided by social media, but the risk to privacy and the other negatives (many more not mentioned here) just aren't worth it.
