Playing the clarinet makes him happy. When someone with dementia moves into the unfamiliar they are not happy, but the gift of dementia is if all your needs are met, you become a Happy. Most likely he knew his wife was going and didn't want her to suffer. The joy of music is everlasting and I bet he’s playing for her still because she will always be with him.
