Hot Wheels Wheelchair for a Tiny Kitten

Hot Wheels Wheelchair for a Tiny Kitten
When Gelato the tabby kitten arrived at a Cincinnati shelter unable to stand, the problem wasn't just medical -- it was mechanical. His back legs were too weak to bear weight, and every existing mobility device was too large for his small frame. So veterinary assistant Mallory Smith looked at what she had on hand: cardboard, rulers, duct tape, and a set of Hot Wheels toy cars. The result was a Transformers-inspired wheelchair that let a kitten who "really wanted to play and walk around" finally do exactly that. What strikes me about this story isn't the ingenuity alone -- it's the attentiveness beneath it, the willingness to see one small animal's longing and take it seriously. As the shelter put it, "sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity, a lot of heart, and someone who refuses to give up." Gelato is now in foster care with Smith, gaining strength daily, and the vets are "pretty optimistic" he'll make a full recovery -- possibly without a wheelchair at all. A toy car carrying a kitten toward wholeness: it's hard to think of a more precise image for what care, undefeated by circumstance, looks like.
