How I Tapped Back Into the Power to Feel Good at Sports

How I Tapped Back Into the Power to Feel Good at Sports
Julie Dickson grew up loving movement -- bikes, swimming, the easy joy of a body in motion -- until high school sorted everyone into "sporty" or not, and she quietly accepted she belonged to the wrong category. What she found in para powerlifting decades later wasn't just athletic ability she never knew she had, but the reclamation of something her younger self once took for granted: the simple right to belong in sport. "These experiences showed me something my younger self naturally knew but the uniformity of high school made me forget: I was a sporty person." As a participant in the World Dwarf Games, her silver medal in powerlifting mattered not because of the podium, but because it was wholly hers -- earned in a community where competitors cheered each other through disqualifications and everyone was chasing their own personal best, not someone else's defeat. It is a quiet reminder that the environments we move through can either diminish us or restore us to ourselves, and that it is never too late for the latter.

Be the Change

Think of one physical activity you loved as a child -- riding a bike, swimming, dancing in your room -- before anyone told you whether you were "good" or "bad" at it. In the spirit of re-sparking joy, do five minutes of that activity today.
