All major religions carry basically the same message. That is love, compassion, and forgiveness. The important thing is they should be part of our daily lives. --Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama on Buddhism in the West:
When his brother died in Indiana in 2008, the Dalai Lama didn't make it to his funeral. When you believe in reincarnation, and that this life is just a doorway to the next, there's no great importance to funerals, his followers explained. Yet, two years later, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate finds himself standing at his brother's Indiana culture center, sharing insights on inner peace and happiness, the commonalities among world religions, and the importance of an unbiased press. One notable point rests in his view of Buddhism's role in the West: "Buddhist religion belongs to the East. The West, Judeo-Christian background you have your own rich tradition. There is no need for a new tradition. But Buddhist science, Buddhist philosophy is universal. So in the west...that is, I think, very useful to learn." [more]

The Dalai Lama would do well to learn the full content of Western opiates... er religions/traditions.

He evidently knows about the minimally-practiced message of unconditional Love... looming over it the Warrior Tribal god of Israel, fear of damnation/rejection and tantalizing reward of heaven pervert minds and inflict suffering on most of us.

Not easy to cure a disease if you won't acknowledge its existence...

The only note I am adding is a selfish one. I am deeply touched by the continued way the Dalai Lama is the pure example of peace in action.  As I myself strive to simply "be peaceful" in all situations and "feel peaceful" when i am clearly angry about spilling make up and the kids dont listen, holy cow - I can hold the softest, most gentle space for anyone else if they come to me with their heart in their hands.  but to give that to myself?  wow, that seems to be a wide and treacherously dangerous canal to enter.

that is how I received the beauty of the article - it reflected back to me that I am a work in progress. Blessings to Dalai and his Brother... they are one and together in any realm.  that is something I am sincerely greatful for.

Christianity is based on Buddhism.Rev.Dr.Noel Sheth (Google), has researched this subject. Tattaghata, TheWay, monastaries, Meditation centers, retreats, the Rosary, etc. are drawn from Buddhism

Thank you Somik for sharing this piece.  It is timely as I am going to New York to hear teachings by HH Dalai Lama this weekend in New York.
