Theater For The Disabled
Belfast, Maine, is home to a Jesuit brother named Rick Curry, whose breads are making headlines and whose National Theater Workshop of the Handicapped is making history. Born without a right forearm, Bro. Curry's parents taught him to never use his handicap as an excuse. The concept for the National Theater Workshop for the Handicapped came after he was turned down for a role in a mouthwash commercial because of his disability, and later that same year, in 1977, Brother Curry founded the NTWH in a lower Manhattan loft to help disabled people find their strengths in acting, music, dance, art and writing. Since the opening of the NTWH in Manhattan, the workshop has expanded its walls to include a summer workshop, fine arts gallery, and a bakery in Belfast, ME whose proceeds go to support the theater.
