Trance-ending Culture of Separation: Birthing the Symbiotic Age

Born into a middle-class Jewish family in the 1960s, Richard Flyer enjoyed a typical American childhood until he had his first spiritual experience at the age of twelve. “I connected to a ‘Luminous Web’ that I recognized as the Ultimate Reality beyond that which we see and feel with our senses. The experience was truly ‘trance-ending’ – ending the trance of separation. I was left awestruck and feeling connected to something larger than myself – in fact, connected to everything.”

Fast-forward fifty years, today, Richard is a pioneer in integrating embodied spirituality with the building of community-based ecosystem networks. He is the author of “Birthing the Symbiotic Age: An Ancient Blueprint for a New Creation” (2023) and Founder of Symbiotic Culture Lab, to catalyze bio-regional communities where mutually beneficial relationships and collaborations among diverse groups of people become the norm, as against the pre-dominant “culture of separation”.

His life's work is deeply influenced by his time spent in Sri Lanka with Sarvodaya Shramadana, an ongoing grassroots movement founded in 1958 by Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne informally known as Gandhi of Sri Lanka, that has energized millions of poor across 15,000+ villages of Sri Lanka restore “control over their own lives and destinies” through building community assets and generating sustainable livelihoods.

Awakin Calls is an initiative of ServiceSpace, a global, all-volunteer community dedicated to small acts of great love. Our webinar and podcast series highlights the outer work and inner journeys of individuals who are transforming our world in large and small ways. We aim to inspire and seed shifts in consciousness by highlighting paradigm-shifting ways of being and doing in the world. We are a heart-centered learning community across wisdom traditions exploring the ServiceSpace principle of “change yourself, change the world”. We organize our processes in accordance with the principles we seek to lift up, and so each conversation is co-created by a team of volunteers distributed across the world, in a spirit of intrinsically motivated service and kinship.
