ネパールは歴史を通じて世界に多くの希望を与えてきた。釈迦の生誕地であるネパールは、以来、あらゆる階層の人々が心の平安と悟りを求めて訪れる、世界的な巡礼地となっている。
しかし、輝かしい歴史を持つにもかかわらず、国内では内戦が頻発している。この国は深刻な貧困と経済的不安定に苦しんでおり、長らく新鮮な風、希望の風、そして繁栄への道筋を必要としてきたことは明らかだ。
自らを世界最大の夢想家の一人と称するスシル・コイララ氏は、大胆な野心と、自国だけでなく世界中の人々のために、より公正で平和な社会を創造したいという深い情熱に突き動かされていると語る。
2008年、彼は「ピース・フォー・ネパール」を設立した。この団体は現在までに、平和を促進する全国的なイベントや集会を60回以上開催している。同時に、スシルは「ローズ・ムーブメント」を開始した。これは、紛争地域の人々が平和をもたらす手段としてバラを交換する活動である。
「バラは普遍的なシンボルであり、誰からも好まれる」と彼は述べ、さらにこう付け加えた。「バラは誰の心にも等しく訴えかける。人種、宗教、あるいは対立する政党の異なる人々の間で、バラを交換したり、握手を交わしたり、善意を示したりすることは、対話にとってより好ましい、前向きな雰囲気を作り出すのに役立つ。」
スシル氏は、こうしたやり取りは単純な行為ではあるものの、その象徴性と意義は非常に大きいと考えている。「バラに様々な色があるように、私たちは国籍、民族、宗教、人種が異なっていても、バラはバラであることに変わりはない。同様に、私たちも皆、まず第一に人間である。それは、人類の一体性を思い出させてくれる。」
ネパール西部シャンジャ地区の農村地帯で生まれたスシルは、幼い頃から祖国の現状を深く憂慮するようになった。中国の医科大学に入学した彼は、そこで初めてネパールの平和運動に身を投じるようになった。
「何か行動を起こさなければならないと分かっていました」とスシルは振り返る。「当時中国にいたことは問題ではありませんでした。2004年末、大学でウェブサイトを作成し、平和を求める嘆願書をオンラインに投稿することで、インターネットキャンペーンを開始しました。また、より多くのメディアの注目を集めるために、記事や訴えも発表しました。そして、この活動への関心が高まるにつれ、大学や留学中に訪れた他の場所で、公開キャンペーンを行うようになりました。」
スシルの若さゆえの献身と情熱は、見過ごされることはなかった。彼はすぐに奨学金を得て世界各地の国際青年サミットに参加し、ネパールにおける平和の必要性を訴えるメッセージを発信するようになった。
卒業後、彼は以前にも増して平和への情熱を燃やしてネパールに戻った。「平和は常に私の人生における最優先事項だと悟った」と彼は振り返り、「私の行動が大小に関わらず、平和への理想が行動に反映されていればそれで良い」と付け加えた。
スシルにとって活動家としての活動は最優先事項であったが、しばしば資源の確保に苦労した。「常に新たな課題が立ちはだかり、時には自分の活動の意義を問い直すこともありました。しかし、理想への信念と豊かさの法則への揺るぎない信念を持ち続けたことで、私は諦めることを拒みました。なぜなら、平和の必要性はもはや無視できない問題だからです。」
世界中に平和のメッセージを広めることに尽力するスシルは、世界平和のためのバラ運動を立ち上げ、その創造性をさらに高めた。運動開始以来、活動家たちはネパール、インド、イタリア、フィリピン、そして最近ではスイスで集会を開催し、6,000本以上のバラを配布してきた。「世界に変化と革命をもたらすのは、銃や戦争ではなく、バラと平和であるべきだと強く感じていました」と彼は語る。「見知らぬ人同士がバラを交換することで生まれる笑顔と幸福感は、特別な瞬間です。」
この運動は、2010年1月にネパールとインドの国境で行われたバラの交換式典をきっかけに大きな注目を集めた。当時、両国間には大きな緊張が走っており、スシルは目の前で事態が悪化していくのを黙って見過ごすことを拒否し、ジャムナハ国境地点の無人地帯へと向かった。
スシルは、あの晴れた午後に両国が一つになった素晴らしい瞬間をこう振り返る。「何百人ものネパール人とインド人が国旗を掲げ、国歌を歌い、平和と調和を求めてバラの花を交換しました。この歴史的な出来事は大々的に報道され、国境沿いの緊張緩和に大きく貢献しました。ネパールの平和にとって、まさに記念すべき日でした。」
バラ運動が拡大するにつれ、スシルの平和への献身と、「より公正な世界は手の届くところにある」という彼の信念もますます強くなっている。彼は、生きているうちに自国と世界に平和が確立されることを願っている。「私たちはネパールの平和に注力していますが、人権、環境、健康といった地球規模の問題にも取り組んでいます。公平で公正な平和を目指して努力しなければなりません」と彼は語る。
スシル氏の平和への貢献が認められ、彼は先日、キリン・ヒーローズ・プロジェクト賞を受賞しました。この財団は、「公共の利益のために危険を冒す勇気を持った」、あまり知られていないリスクテイカーたちを表彰しています。

Absolutely true, being kind is more important than being clever. I would add being "genuinely" kind and not calculating to that message. Thank you for sharing the article, we all could benefit from being a bit more kind to each other simply because it is the right thing to do, not because it's good for business, but because it makes someone feel better. As a Storyteller who sold her home and possessions to found/facilitate volunteer literacy project to preserve and promote indigenous cultures in Belize (and next year Kenya, Ghana and India), I see kindness all the time. When you set a project in motion from the heart, it is amazing how people respond. Another passion is offering and organizing FREE HUGs around the world, incredibly powerful experiences, connecting one to another. We are so desperate to connect. And it is often so simple to DO; make that bowl of soup, give that tiny little cookie to the crying child in the cart at the supermarket, a hot cup of tea to the postal carrier, hug someone. [Hide Full Comment]I believe the media has brainwashed us into thinking that big business is bad, cold hearted and only care about the bottom line. I have not found that to be true in my life and I believe there are more stories like this that we never hear about because they are not published, sought after or known. This story talked about 2 of those "big businesses." These businesses grow "big" because of their connection to their customers and the service they provide to us. Long live this kind of "big business."
Perhaps Grandmother and Grandfather needed to learn it is better to be kind than right. The little boy was trying to save his Grandmother's lungs and even his own! Children can be right and kind!
