En medio de la violencia desenfrenada de pandillas en un barrio del sur de Chicago, una abuela tiene una política de puertas abiertas.
Diane Latiker, de 54 años y residente de Roseland, inició una comunidad sin fines de lucro con 10 niños en su sala de estar en 2003. El programa, Kids Off The Block , ha crecido hasta convertirse en un exitoso sitio de tutoría y refugio para los jóvenes de Chicago, que atendió a 300 niños el año pasado, informa CNN .
Latiker, quien tiene ocho hijos y 13 nietos, ha sido reconocida como Héroe de CNN. Habla sobre su trabajo con los jóvenes que cuentan con Kids Off The Block:
"No importa de dónde vengan ni lo que hayan hecho", dijo Latiker. "Hubo una época en que había seis pandillas en mi sala... Pero ese era el lugar seguro. ¿Y saben qué? Lo respetaban".
En un día cualquiera, entre 30 y 50 jóvenes acuden al centro para recibir sesiones de tutoría con profesores y educadores jubilados, formación para entrevistas de trabajo y excursiones a museos o al cine.
El año pasado, Latiker logró trasladar el programa a un edificio contiguo a su casa, pero no sin antes hacer algunos sacrificios personales. Vendió el televisor familiar para financiar el programa y regaló su juego de comedor para hacer espacio para una computadora.
Maurice Gilchrist, de 15 años, le dice a CNN lo agradecido que está con Latiker.
Tenía 12 años cuando me uní a una pandilla: robaba, robaba. La señorita Diane me cambió la vida. La amo por eso.

PS I think we write the new stories by living them. I think we can redesign our economic system to support the whole of our interconnected systems once we understand the relationships and recognize why and how we went off kilter. When we realize we can forgive the ignorance and change the entire story, we will. We are born wonderful, we each have a unique gift for the world and setting up new systems that respect and appreciate the juxtapose between the individual, the society and the biosphere ( more some subtle, some not, too many threads to show them all) we can get it "more" right in the next chapter.
Thank you Latiker for holding the light on the loss and being a beacon for the living. I hope the new meaningful work reformation arises soon. I'm working on it and would love to hear about others doing the same.
"It doesn't matter where they come from, what they've done," Latiker said. "We've had six gangs in my living room at one time...But that was the safe place. And you know what? They respected that."

Studies show that when we are cared for, nurtured, appreciated for what and who we are and supported in real and sometimes measurable ways..we will all thrive and create a healthy world. We will not need to procreate, step on others, compete in struggle for survival or otherwise need to dominate in order to show up or validate who we are "supposed to be." That game is over but the new stories are only beginning and without the new stories what next becomes intimidating. We need to start the infrastructure for an inclusive, loving, potentiating, enabling, healthy whole systems (mind, body spirit aligned with rest of planet's natural systems) next act.
