The Big 'And': What I Learned From Clowns

I like that these clowns are not completely hiding beneath make-up and costume. They look like "real people", but with a funny red nose. The fact that I can see their real faces makes them safe and relatable. They come across as real people who are willing to step outside formality and hierarchy to reach people who are in their most disempowered and vulnerable place. I normally do not like clowns. I do not trust someone I cannot see, and I've "met" some really creepy, intrusive and annoying clowns hiding beneath costumes and make-up. I am very touched that these folks do this work, in this way, under very difficult circumstances.
