Thank you for sharing Amazing thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi.
Well some has praised and some has criticized this old Indian man, who was born in (Gujarat) India in 1869, he came to London in 1888 to get higher education and study Law also qualified as a Lawyer in England, matured and kind man care for his principle of Humanity in very early era; with due respect for all religions with strong belief in Truth, Non Violence and Forgiveness! He fight on these principles and had successful victory, and whole world has recognized and respected him as a Hero! Isn't it good enough to appreciate others good view ! Critics hardly see or learn from good qualities found in others !
Gandhi never said be the change. American
Arleen Lorrance wrote it in 1971
Whether quoting Ghandi or not, this is all good and inspiring advice. I don't know much about the man, I've heard good and bad. But the bottom line is, we need more positive thinking in the world. That's a really hard thing to come by these days, bad news around every corner for some of us. I've found my most positive changes begin when I change my own mind or allow someone else to inspire me. Thank you for your inspiration.
You said "Mahatma Gandhi needs no long introduction. Everyone knows about the man who lead the Indian people to independence from British rule in 1947."
This statement may be true for many but not the young generation becoming leaders today. We must continue to educate the children (the future) in order to help the world. Each breathing living person needs the strengthening balm of peace (awareness of peace) to become part of an ever evolving civilization.
I love this article, and agree with the concepts you've posted here.
That being said, Gandhi did NOT say "be the change you want to see in the world." See here for details: https://josephranseth.com/g...
"Be the change" does capture the essence of his teachings, and your article is a powerful resource for anyone wanting to self-purify and positively impact others in profound ways. (I'm just on a bit of a mission to clarify the mis-attribution of Gandhi's quote.)
Keep up the great work!
LATTERLY, MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THE NEGATIVES OF THE PRE-INDEPENDENCE LEADER-SOME CALLING HIM A CLOSETED GAY. OTHERS DESCRIBING HIM AS RACIST.............THE MANY WHO HAVE COME TO REVERE HIM, NOW SOMEWHAT STUNNED AT THE ALLEGATIONS
Please stop portraying Ghandi as a prophet by lying and associating others motivational stories and quotes to him. Gando's stories of racism, slavery, women rights abuses in Africa are known all over the world and easily available on Internet. Please research a little before and be truthful before coming up with such stuff.

Thanks for the informative article. Being the change!!
It is ironic that sometimes people who think highly of other 'leaders' ignore their bad qualities but tend to focus on the negatives of Gandhi which he, as a human, had, in his earlier life. For those, I say, correct your behavior first, before you criticize people who have done majority good!
Amazing how wise words remain wise words - truth remains truth no matter when it is spoken or heard. Good words for right now - thank you, Mahatma Gandi.

"5. Take care of this moment."
Yes, and yet keep a very watchful eye on both the past and the future. Living in the moment is often like a gift, much as a walk on the beach, or reading a fascinating book of fiction. If we are open to the miracles present in each moment, amazing possibilities are available. And yet, we are forging a future based on our attention to all three - the past, the present, and the future. Take care of this moment for the future is contained in each and every step, and many clues to a better life beyond mere existence are laid down in both the misery and triumphs of the past. If we aren't "taking care" of our attention on both the past and the future, we close the door to evolving enlightenment. Meditation and awareness on this moment are wonderful and necessary, and yet will never be enough for humanity to rise from the lessons hidden in the past or the limits placed on the present.
Take care of the past, and the present, and walk purposefully into a future that "you", one-by-one person at a time, want to be living, forged with your actions in the present, or you will wake up in a world not of "your" making. You will be living in a future planned and executed by those who did keep a watchful eye on the future by, indeed, taking care of this moment. Someone is and will be taking care of the future. Make it you. Make your present moment count in "your" future. Make it a future that you want to live within. And start working and living toward it now, right now, in the present.
Decide to take care of the past, present, and the future. Don't be blindsided by someone else's dream for the future, and especially when the ideas of some upholds the supposedly superior and entitled, and disrespects and disempowers others, or that is disrespectful of some human beings, all life forms, or that attempts to commodify and profit from the great "gift" of life, that damages and destroys the dignity and intrinsic worth of peoples, cultures, lands, creatures, fish, insects, plants, trees, forests, soils, waters, air, and life itself from our shared planet home.
Wake up yourself instead.
You are the future, living and working in the present, and learning from the past.
Make good use of both the past and the present to create a better future for you and for all than we have in this current moment in time of our human and planetary history.
We are blessed to have this moment to begin building a better world.
Give thanks for your life, and begin building a future that is truthful, just, merciful, and good. A future of truth, goodness, fullness, and abundance for all is begun with my hopes and dreams for the future, attention on the past, And the actions that I choose today.
Make your attention on the past, and your actions in the present count for the future we will all live within.

[Hide Full Comment]Gandhi's 10 Rules for Changing the World
[Hide Full Comment]•• Gandhi: 1. Change yourself: "You must be the change you want to see in the world. As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves."
*BeiYin: 'Change yourself' is an advice that goes against the 'law of nature' in that every thing once established, tries to keep it's state. That this is also the case with human beings, we can observe all around and within ourselves. Every body holds on ones 'properties' and does every thing to get more if it, to be sure that it stays like it is. Why? Because humans are *identified* with what they 'own' and so they are getting their feeling of 'existence' out of it!
• So the advice 'change yourself' will only be used to get more of the already gathered and if possible in more advanced and sophisticated aspects, whatever this might be...
• We can't and we don't need to 'remake ourselves'! No manipulation is required on no level of our existence! Not with our body, our mind, our emotions and not at the outside world! We only need to become *aware* of our state of *being* within that we are in this moment and then *relate* and *respond* the best we are capable, knowing that we are limited in our knowledge, due to our still erroneous state of being!
•• Gandhi: 2. You are in control. “Nobody can hurt me without my permission.”
*BeiYin: That's what every body wants: 'To be in control'! To be able to protect oneself against every thing that might 'hurt' oneself in ones established existence! How one feels and how one reacts depends on ones established mindset and only of a small part one is conscious about. The subconscious part, about that one is absolutely NOT aware, causes one to react on every thing that shows up in ones daily life and so there is no control possible, only manipulation at the outside!
• That makes it clear, that we are all stuck within a straitjacket of our established mindset, even though we have the self image that we are 'free' and able to 'control' our life!
• We are living out of concepts, goals and values, that are the result of centuries of misinterpretation and manipulation. We are defending our erroneous properties, with that we are so strongly identified and we have a big arsenal of defense tricks, to hold on what we believe we are! We always give the reason for every thing, that might hurt us in our property, to the outside and others and so keeping ourselves as much untouched as possible.
•• Gandhi: 3. Forgive and let it go. “The weak can never forgive. - Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
*BeiYin: One can find for every thing a manipulation trick. You can see yourself as 'strong' and play this 'role', what includes that you can 'forgive' when you are hurt. With this tactic avoiding to look at yourself, realizing that you got hurt because you are conditioned and so dependent and weak. If you would *grow* through being *aware* of your conditioning by being able to use the encounter with others and your surrounding, then you would be thankful that they have caused your 'reactions' and so you would 'forgive' as part of your *understanding*, about yourself and the 'other'...
•• Gandhi: 4. Without action you aren't going anywhere. “An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”
*BeiYin: An 'action' might be the result of a 'reaction' caused as an unconscious response, that then might cause an unwanted result that keeps one occupied and within the 'game'!
• Or ones 'action' is the result, when relating to a situation or condition, not necessarily reacting to spectacular aspects, but looking behind the appearance and then out of being responsible, acting in the best way one is capable. Knowing that the happening is a *challenge* as part of ones *growing*.
•• Gandhi: 5. Take care of this moment. “I do not want to foresee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me no control over the moment following.”
*BeiYin: 'The moment following' is the result of ones response to the moment right NOW. Then one can *relate* to this new moment and respond. When one reacts out of ones unconscious background, then the next 'moment' can serve oneself even stronger, as one might be pushed with ones nose into ones own misery! - Your 'God' will probably just laugh about your silliness...
•• Gandhi: 6. Everyone is human. “I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps. It is unwise to be too sure of ones own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”
*BeiYin: The characteristic of 'humans' is, that they put labels on every thing and then believe that they know what it is all about. Then they can classify all their property and store it in their mindset. Getting their sense and feeling of EXISTENCE out of it! Not needing and avoiding, to realize that all is based on erroneous interpretation and manipulation since beginning of 'humankind'! They see themselves as 'advanced' beings, when they admit that they might commit 'errors', not being able to realize, that they are living in a self created fake reality!
•• Gandhi: 7. Persist. “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
*BeiYin: Using this advice you can justify to hold on your established identification game and go on finding confirmation from the outside world and others.
•• Gandhi: 8. See the good in people and help them. “I look only to the good qualities of men. Not being faultless myself, I won't presume to probe into the faults of others. Man becomes great exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his fellow-men. I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.”
*BeiYin: 'Leadership today' means telling people what they want to hear and so 'getting along' with them, using this to manipulate people for their own benefit! -
To look 'only at the good qualities of men' is just too silly. - Ones 'observation' must include ones own condition! One need to be *aware* of all conditions to be able to respond in an effective and creative way, outside and within oneself! And only when one is *aware* of ones *whole being* then one can see the outside and others in an *objective* way!
•• Gandhi: 9. Be congruent, be authentic, be your true self. “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.”
*BeiYin: These 'rules' were written more than seventy years ago! Now it becomes clear from where all those beautiful advanced 'quotes' with all those spiritual advises are coming from! And still without any information!
How possibly one can 'be authentic' and 'be ones true self'??? This advice only creates an even more sophisticated fake self image with that people can identify themselves and be busy trying to find confirmation for it when joining other 'like minded' and 'kindred spirits'!
Shouldn't it clear by now, that this is a survival game, keeping oneself going within ones fake reality?
So people can avoid to confront *reality* in their daily life and having the perfect survival trick always and every where at hand!
•• Gandhi: 10. Continue to grow and evolve. ”Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.”
*BeiYin: It doesn't need the advice to 'grow' and to 'keep growing'! What would help is the information and the understanding of it, that all *alive beings* are *growing*! And this for sure doesn't depend if you want this or NOT! One can observe the *growing* all around! In humans this is not so obvious, as they seem to be stuck in their present state of being. But also a beetle seems to be stuck when in the state of a cocoon, it is just a phase of transformation and then the moment will come, when the pressure from inside rises so much, breaking the stuck form and so the 'butterfly' can fly...
So better we *trust* our inbuilt *growing* force and then don't need to struggle to free ourselves so much!
We can also *trust* that the growing force is present every where in ones life and presents in any moment the opportunity to use every thing in ones daily life to *grow*! We should also 'know', that from our human side, there is resistance and we make ourselves blind by ignoring and rejecting what we don't 'like', because it doesn't confirm us in our established 'self image'.
So there should show up some essential and creative questions! The fact that there are hardly any doubts and so no questions, tells that one is not yet *ready* and must continue dreaming and struggling within ones 'cocoon' of illusions and ones 'self image'...
Or do you have an urgent, personal question? Then ask!
Gandhi's "10 Rules for Changing the World" and my comments on these...
•• Gandhi: 1. Change
yourself: "You must be the change you want to see in the world. As human
beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the
world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake
ourselves."
*BeiYin: 'Change yourself' is an advice that goes
against the 'law of nature' in that every thing once established, tries
to keep it's state. That this is also the case with human beings, we can
observe all around and within ourselves. Every body holds on ones
'properties' and does every thing to get more if it, to be sure that it
stays like it is. Why? Because humans are *identified* with what they
'own' and so they are getting their feeling of 'existence' out of it!
• So the advice 'change yourself' will only be used to get more of the
already gathered and if possible in more advanced and sophisticated
aspects, whatever this might be...
• We can't and we don't need to
'remake ourselves'! No manipulation is required on no level of our
existence! Not with our body, our mind, our emotions and not at the
outside world! We only need to become *aware* of our state of *being*
within that we are in this moment and then *relate* and *respond* the
best we are capable, knowing that we are limited in our knowledge, due
to our still erroneous state of being!
•• Gandhi: 2. You are in control. “Nobody can hurt me without my permission.”
*BeiYin: That's what every body wants: 'To be in control'! To be able
to protect oneself against every thing that might 'hurt' oneself in ones
established existence! How one feels and how one reacts depends on ones
established mindset and only of a small part one is conscious about.
The subconscious part, about that one is absolutely NOT aware, causes
one to react on every thing that shows up in ones daily life and so
there is no control possible, only manipulation at the outside!
•
That makes it clear, that we are all stuck within a straitjacket of our
established mindset, even though we have the self image that we are
'free' and able to 'control' our life!
• We are living out of
concepts, goals and values, that are the result of centuries of
misinterpretation and manipulation. We are defending our erroneous
properties, with that we are so strongly identified and we have a big
arsenal of defense tricks, to hold on what we believe we are! We always
find and give the reason for every thing that might hurt us in our
property, to the outside and others and so keeping ourselves as much
untouched as possible.
•• Gandhi: 3. Forgive and let it go. “The
weak can never forgive. - Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. An
eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
*BeiYin:
One can find for every thing a manipulation trick. You can see yourself
as 'strong' and play this 'role', what includes that you can 'forgive'
when you are hurt. With this tactic avoiding to look at yourself,
realizing that you got hurt because you are conditioned and so dependent
and weak. If you would *grow* through being *aware* of your
conditioning by being able to use the encounter with others and your
surrounding, then you would be thankful that they have caused your
'reactions' and so you would 'forgive' as part of your *understanding*,
about yourself and the 'other'...
•• Gandhi: 4. Without action you aren't going anywhere. “An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”
*BeiYin: An 'action' might be the result of a 'reaction' caused as an
unconscious response, that then might cause an unwanted result that
keeps one occupied and within the 'game'!
• Or ones 'action' is the
result, when relating to a situation or condition, not necessarily
reacting to spectacular aspects, but looking behind the appearance and
then out of being responsible, acting in the best way one is capable.
Knowing that the happening is a *challenge* as part of ones *growing*.
•• Gandhi: 5. Take care of this moment. “I do not want to foresee the
future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me
no control over the moment following.”
*BeiYin: 'The moment
following' is the result of ones response to the moment right NOW. Then
one can *relate* to this new moment and respond. When one reacts out of
ones unconscious background, then the next 'moment' can serve oneself
even stronger, as one might be pushed with ones nose into ones own shit!
- Your 'God' will probably just laugh about your silliness...
••
Gandhi: 6. Everyone is human. “I claim to be a simple individual liable
to err like any other fellow mortal. I own, however, that I have
humility enough to confess my errors and to retrace my steps. It is
unwise to be too sure of ones own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded
that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”
*BeiYin:
The characteristic of 'humans' is, that they put labels on every thing
and then believe that they know what it is all about. Then they can
classify all their property and store it in their mindset. Getting their
sense and feeling of EXISTENCE out of it! Not needing and avoiding, to
realize that all is based on erroneous interpretation and manipulation
since beginning of 'humankind'! They see themselves as 'advanced'
beings, when they admit that they might commit 'errors', not being able
to realize, that they are living in a self created fake reality!
•• Gandhi: 7. Persist. “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
*BeiYin: Using this advice you can justify to hold on your established
identification game and go on finding confirmation from the outside
world and others.
•• Gandhi: 8. See the good in people and help
them. “I look only to the good qualities of men. Not being faultless
myself, I won't presume to probe into the faults of others. Man becomes
great exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his
fellow-men. I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it
means getting along with people.”

Awesome... love it
I had a good friend email me these amazing 10 thoughts of a truly highly evolved human being. Mahatma Gandhi is that once in a thousand years gift that all of humanity was presented by god. I now would like to quote a modern contemporary Mr Neil Young; "When one comes to a fork in the road lets not curse the darkness, but instead lets light a candle for all to see their way to safety". Mahatma Gandhi within these 10 thoughts has lighted many candles for all of us to find our ways through our daily lives. Mark P Schiesser, 2-5-2014.

Gandhi bastards drove back Indian Independence by many years. If he has motivated people to take guns in hand and favored all those Armed Revolutionaries, India might got Independence 100 years before 1947.

The simple aim of all individuals is to find peace & prosperity, their effort often does not get fulfilled, yet the satisfaction is they try to achieve the impossible.
Thank you so much for not only the words, but the tie-in to Action and the extra thoughtfulness of including extended readings. <3

While all of Ghandi's wisdom, and the insightful commentary, resonate with me, #10 truly pinpoints the place I find myself in now. An old belief keep tugging at me, while my inner, spiritual compass is gravitating me in a very different direction. It's been a challenge, but I'm learning to keep pressing forward. Thank you so much for this site!
This is one true sage that if humanity has plenty of the world would be a much more beautiful place in which to live.
