– mondta Mary Ellen, felidézve a borzalmat, amit érzett.

Manapság a The 9 Nanas még nagyobb projekteket is képes vállalni, tekintettel online sikerére.

Awesome story. Generosity as a foundation. Pay it forward from MaMaw and PaPaw to future generations. What would it take to create something similar in more communities? Philanthropy would take on a very different character - and it's something all of us can do.

The Christmas after my son died, I decided to give his Christmas money to his recently married friends who were raising two small children, in gratitude for their friendship to my son. It's been 14 years, and each year I have found someone -- mostly young people who knew my son -- to give the money to. Several times through the years, I learned only upon delivering the check that there was a great need that I had not been aware of. It seemed almost as if I was being led to the person who needed the money the most. Most often, it has been young people raising a family, but once it was an immigrant in need of training to get a job and another time a friend who runs a homeless shelter. I know the money was helpful, but I mostly wanted them to know that someone cared about them and that they always had someone to turn to for help. It is my way of giving back to so many people who cared deeply about my son during his life. My thought sometimes is that if I can no longer "do" for my son wh... [View Full Comment]

This is beautiful. What a spirited and deeply committed group of women. It’s inspiring. Knowing that I live in a place that gets fires (it took my mother’s house down in Napa) I’m very concerned about my landlord’s property. He’s not a gardener. He can only afford paying me 3 hours a month for helping his garden. But I instinctually knew that the weeds need to go along our property. And even along the roadside where a ditch fills with leaves. A flooded roadside would not be safe. A neighbor once stopped and asked if she could bring a weedwhacker!! When we step out of the familiar, others step forward as well. What a beautiful experience getting to know neighbors as well.

These women are amazing. They worked together to do both small and large acts of kindness for other people in their community. They gave of themselves with some hard work and sacrifice: getting up so early, laundering their husbands’ shirts, and saving money so they could help other people. This family enterprise reflected their family values, demonstrated by their grandparents and passed down through their children. In my opinion having generations of your family doing charitable work is a wonderful legacy. I was brought up and also raised my children with the responsibility to improve the world through acts of kindness and charity. It is humbling and inspiring to see what these women accomplished.

Wow! I can't even imagine being that determined and committed to creatively helping so many in need, in so many ways. What an amazing "sisterhood" they created, that ended up involving their whole families. Something to aspire to, to have that much kindness, generosity and love in my heart. And I sure would like to taste one of those special pound cakes!

What a wonderful story of nine wonderful women that eventually, their husbands and children! Such a good example of how something grew from a small idea to ever expanding purpose of goodness. And obviously they were having a lot fun doing it from the get-go. I can’t imagine it would be even half as much fun doing it by yourself.

Never got up for bathroom and saw they were missing ? Would love to believe it’s a fairy tale.

Oh my..made me cry. How I would love to meet these ladies. Do they hand out their recipe or a nana secret?
I am the bread lady of my neighborhood... take to those who are sick, sad, or just need something homemade to warm their heart. I also teach others ( in their home or mine..but they bring all the ingredients so they know what to purchase the next time!). I am amazed how much fun they have going home with their own bread, cinnamon buns or whatever fun thing they want to make. The kneading is such a great stress reducer they soon learn! The little kids in the neighborhood call it Missjody toast....cinnamon bread . I use coffee cans for bread pans.
It is just a little way to help. I love the process, the smells and the ability to make another smile! I give it all away.

This is the most amazing tear invoking story. I am in awe how people can meet the unfolding divine beauty of how giving encounters the ensuing gift of the universe. All disguises for the exchange of love.
User avatar
Mary Thomson Mar 1, 2024
Drive by kindness! The power of loving acts of kindness is something that some people are lucky enough to experience, practice or witness. This is because of the impact it can have on both the giver and receiver. It of course requires the receiver to appreciate the gift and for the giver to give with their heart. Often the gift itself is immaterial to the exchange, and in fact a material gift for the sake of it with no will to give seems to convey that energy. In my experience giving a smile is enough or not depending on the spirit with which it is given. The radar for the energy is not something all people are tuned into. I am wondering how the secret giving impacts vs knowing who is giving?

I think everyone is missing the point here. You're all arguing about M's comment, left a YEAR ago, which by the way was quite nice. Wow, you all get so touchy when it comes to pets. Grown adults bickering like children.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that the story is touching. We don't know what the pet meant to this person, and for these women to step up and help up is admirable. However. If your pet helped you through the toughest parts of your life, when no one else cared, and you want to spend $3000 to get your pet the help s/he needs, do it. At that point, your pet is irreplaceable, because it's honestly become more than. But let's say this isn't the case, and you have children, and your young child ALSO needs an operation, for example, who would get priority? Your pet, or your child?

You are missing the message here. It is about WHO YOU ARE. Some folks can and will help. Some folks understand love in many ways, some folks have "their" priorities right, others don't.
I was a single mom and raised 2 children alone. We had pets who were family members. The pets and children had medical as well as all the other necessary comforts. We did not live extravagantly, we lived with "Faith". My daughter and I now have an animal sanctuary with some 60 plus dog, cats and farm animals. Our lives are RICH in love, respect, honor and reverence. WHO ARE YOU? Are you RICH?

Why people who OBVIOUSLY believe in Survival of the Fittest, spend thousands on a pet who wouldn't survive in the wild is BEYOND ME.
Human life compared to an animals life is MUCH MORE VALUABLE.
Vets are scam, $5K for surgery?

User avatar
Anders Beatty Aug 29, 2013

Just read the thread below in respect to the value of pets and it seems obvious to me that the arguement is about how rich one is. If you can afford to pay for your dogs cats surgery one will irrespective of the cost. If you are wealthy and still put your animal to sleep then you should nt of had a pet. Its called responsibility of care. I d rather keep my dog alive at the cost of $3000 than blow it on a holiday or buy a new 50 inch flat screen TV. Its about priorities surely?

Your condescending asininity aside, not only does her priesthood put her well above you in her training, but so does her Doctorate in Divinity from the University of London.

As to your next bit of dogmatic nonsense you need to seriously review your doctrine of original sin. There is a reason that term is used. It is not just random words. It is not original inclination toward misdeeds, or original fall from grace, It is original sin, as first described by Irenaeus, Bishop ofLyons, in discussions with the Gnostics, in which he made clear that after Adam's fall, all human beings PARTICIPATE and thus share in his sin and guilt. This gave rise to Augustine's concept of metaphysical concupiscence, inherited from Adam by all future generations, and that Jesus, the only man conceived outside of this concupiscence, was the only man free of this original sin. Beyond that, you might do well to reread the entire Book of Job, as, just as with the doctrine of original sin, you appear to have missed the entire point of the story. (see below)

As for the name of Jesus, no, the word is the English transliteration of the Greek. The English spelling of his name is Yoshu.

As to your last bit of doctrinal nonsense, you appear to have missed the ENTIRE point of the crucifixion. Immediately preceding his death, he was said to have taken upon him the sins of all man, which was released in the uttered cry, "Elohi, Elohi, lama sabachthani". Again, if you do not understand the sinful nature of this utterance, you need to revisit Job, and you need to rethink the entire role of the scape goat. What on earth do you think the point of that part of the story was?!?

I have no bone to pick with your Church, or even your egoistic practice of perpetual capitalization. That fact that you see such when none is present says much about the motivation for you argument here. While I DO think you are all pablum-feeding sheep of week intellect believing in nonsensical fairy tales with no more instantiation that the tiki idols of an island native, I could care less what you believe. In fact, I rather enjoy watching your particular sect squirm as globally it fights to retain membership, and membership in developed countries falls through the floor.

But while we are on the subject of Jesus, how about we go straight to the source for a refutation of your nonsensical, unsupportable claim re: intrinsic sin. You claim that the position of the Church is that sin is the result of actions. However, you then have a distinct problem with Matthew 5:28:

"But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

No action here, not even real intent, necessary, just the thought. And this "adultery of the mind" is declared sinful by YOUR god. And this itself derives directly from the same aforementioned original sin, that is sinful, not as a result of ANY action, but rather as a result of the intrinsic nature of man, inherited from Adam.

This is so inspiring. i've always wanted to do more and be more for people but i've been sick since i was 7 years old. In the last few years after i was finally diagnosed with Cushing's Disease and Acromegaly. i had two brain surgeries and had my adrenal glands removed (in order for me to stay alive - long story) It's been almost 4 months now and i'm the healthiest i've never been so well in my life. As i continue to get better i want to more than anything to help my community and bring smiles to the faces of as many people as i can. i want to spread God's love, as He loved me. i am a servant at heart, but my body wouldn't let me serve because i was too sick. i'm very happy to be able to begin to do what God called me to do, serve. Thank you with all of my heart for doing God's work and sharing this story with the world. Alicia

I won't have anyone else's "pet" in my house, regardless of how much they are a part of their family. The last time we let friends come with their dog, we walked outside to check on the BBQ, and the dog ate every last thing on the table, chewing my grandmother's tablecloth in the mess. Nope, they're not worth "heaven and earth"...get a real life. Pets are wonderful companions, but they should never be held in higher regard than humans.

If someone wants to help animals in need that is wonderful! Generosity and love for animals and/or humans is not what is hurting people! People being mean and unkind is what is harmful. I always find it very interesting when people argue over whether they would or wouldn't pay to save a pet. It's easy to see who does or doesn't have a soul. It's juvenile and rude to tell others that what they do with their pet(s) is wrong. Just because you talk the loudest or the most doesn't make you right. We've paid thousands upon thousands of dollars, many times, for vet bills, surgeries, and general care for our greyhounds. Greyhounds that we SAVED after their racing careers were over and they would've been killed. Our dogs live lives better than a lot of people, because they deserve it and because we love them. One dog had a $9000 surgery just a few months after we adopted her. This same dog lived for 16 years (almost unheard of for a grey) and in those years we spent enough to put a child through college. We've had 7 greyhounds and they're worth EVERY CENT we've spent on them. There's nothing we won't do for them and fortunately, we're able to do so.... [View Full Comment]

I agree completely. We don't have cable TV or new cars and we buy a lot of our clothes second-hand and we shop with coupons. We do this so that we can put money into savings and so that we have the funds to help others in our community. For us it is mostly animals we help, but we also help homeless people and low-income families and veterans, as these are the causes we care about the most. Also, our pets' well-being is important to us and they get the care they need. It's really about prioritizing. Is caring for a living thing that depends on you something that you value, or are "things" and luxuries most important?

What part of the doctrine of original sin do YOU not understand? The idea that the Roman Catholic Church (as opposed to all the other catholic churches) "does NOT and never has called a person intrinsically sinful" is absurd. In fact, the position of the RCC is that ALL people are intrinsically sinful. You could not have more fully misstated the position of the RCC if you'd tried.

And to the best of my ability, I am talking about what the Catholic Church teaches, not what individual members claim or others claim we say or do.

That said, the Church does NOT condemn anyone for being what they are. Absolutely does not. I defy anyone to quote to me from Catholic sources only where the Church does this.

We believe that all are called to chastity according to our state in life. In other words, no sex outside of marriage. We also believe that marriage is a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman. Therefore anyone who is attracted to members of the same sex is called to a life of celibacy. The Church also understands that this is a trial for them.

You can read this in paragraphs 2357-2359 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

In paragraph 2357 the Church does call homosexual ACTS, not people, intrinsically disordered. This is in the sense that these acts are not naturally ordered to procreation and are contrary to natural law.

2358 recognizes that chastity is going to be a trial and then says the following:

"They (homosexual persons) must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition."

Finally 2359 states the call to chasity as follows:

"Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection."

The Church expects the same of homosexual persons as She does of heterosexual persons. If you are not or cannot be married, you are called to not have sexual relations of any kind. What the Church condems is discrimination and unjust treatment of anyone and everyone, hetero and homosexuals alike.

So, yes, we recognize that homosexuals are treated harshly by others. And we do NOT approve or support it. Catholics who do are acting against the explicit teaching of the Church in these matters.

As for the rainbow sash, I am afraid that I do not agree that it's not meant to make a political statement or a prostest against Church positions and neither did the Archbishop in Minnesota. He never said those who wore the sashes were barred from Communion. It was that they could not wear the sashes to Communion. He did not think it appropriate as it sure seemed to be making a statement rather than just showing up to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in Holy Communion.

Marriage a solely secular institution is a modern novelty, therefore it is not the Church who is politicizing it. We do not beleive or teach that anyone can marry a person of the opposite sex. This as been the case for all of human history until the last 15-20 years or so in this country at least. The momentum to change the definition of marriage seems to have picked up in that time frame. We do not seek to change the definition or expand or limit it. To us, it is what it is.

You say that love is love and that is what religion should be about. I agree. However, we obviously differ on how that works out. If I believe that anyone's sex outside of marriage is sinful, then in love and hope for the salvation of their souls, I urge them to stop and repent. That is true for any sin. The problem is that not everyone agrees on what is sin obviously.

Finally I reiterate that what individuals do that goes against their faith's teaching are in the wrong, no matter their status. Also, I hardly think that it's right to compare the Catholic Church's teachings on this to how gays are treated in an Islamist regime for instance. We have no control or say over how they treat anyone and we condemn their unjust practices just as we condemn unjust practices everywhere.

I read articles like this, and being the skeptic that I am, while I applaud charitable efforts, I wonder if these stories aren't being published to distract people from the very real issues related to poverty and hardship that we seem to just refuse to eradicate, and blame on the poor themselves. It looks to me like an easy way to justify eliminating the few government supports we have in our social safety net, in favour of private charity.

If we collected the Just Rent of the products of Nature equally, then we would have a ready source of wealth with which to fund an unconditional Universal Basic Income. Maybe we should think about being less distracted from the real issues by tasty cakes.

Yes we can "come to church" but Catholics who self-identify as gay or gay-allied by wearing a rainbow stole are not allowed to participate in communion.

For 600 years, from the time of Aquinas, homosexuals who were not sexually active were welcome in the Church. About 1985, Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger, single-handedly changed the Church's position by declaring that gay people, even those who were not "active" were nevertheless intrinsically sinfully, just by existing, not for anything they did.

So far, LGBT people have absolutely NO reason to trust the Roman Catholic Church.

Being a part of a group, a religion, a social order, a belief system...it does NOT mean that all other people in that group are kind, or generous, or love someone. Do not believe for even a moment that "because they're christian!" means that they care or feel the same that you do.

There are monsters in every closet- even mine, and even yours. Religion is not a free trip to morality. It's just a paper bag people can put over their head, that has 'morality' written on the inside of it. Some people choose to read it, and become that word- to be kind, and care.

Others become scared and mad, and they hurt people. They believe that they were right because that word was put in front of them, so they must be what they read...even when they aren't.
