基本的な歩道橋があればこの問題は解決できるはずだが、発展途上国の無数の地域では、こうした簡素な構造物さえ存在しない。
Bridges to Prosperityは、この問題の解決を目指しています。デンバーを拠点とするこの非営利団体は、孤立した地域社会が医療、教育、経済的機会にアクセスできるよう、歩道橋を建設しています。
「これは人々が現状から抜け出したり、貧困レベルから脱却したりするのに役立つ唯一のものではありませんが、間違いなくきっかけとなるものです」と、ブリッジズ・トゥ・プロスペリティのエグゼクティブディレクター、エイブリー・バン氏は説明した。
Bridges to Prosperityは、14か国に約100の橋を建設し、世界中の地域社会に前向きな社会変革をもたらすことを目指しています。調査によると、歩道橋が1つ建設されると、地域の学校への入学率が平均12%増加し、地元の医療施設で治療を受ける人の数が18%増加することが示されています。歩道橋が開通してから2年間で、地域社会における女性の雇用率は24%増加し、周辺地域の企業数は15%増加、一人当たりの所得は平均10～20%増加します。
橋梁は、リスクが低く費用対効果の高い投資でもある。「以前は水道事業に携わっていましたが、失敗率が非常に高かったのです」とバン氏は語る。「最初の2～3年で80%ものプロジェクトが失敗するのを見ると、本当に役に立っているのかと真剣に考えざるを得ません」。橋梁の場合、その効果は明らかだ。1万ドルの投資で、少なくとも30年間地域社会に貢献する歩道橋が建設できる。

and wasn't this the way missionaries went in to help folks and ended up feeding them new ideas and paving the way for the USA (Hawaii in mind here- other nation grabs started with "good will " flags flying as well) to come in , to supporty its interests aka the interests of business? Unless help has a zero strings attached contract..this is pure hype. Look at the 2d lives of many young people and realize it as a failure to attend to 3d and more life (Quantum Physics can help us out a lot here! We are not thriving under our old thinking. For despite adaptations, the old beliefs that set us up to be "here" are now looking really wrong minded, they fall short of what many now hold to be true- ok if one is multi disciplined in research one sees the patterns and starts to recognize the dis-ease. We cannot heal to we see the dis-ease! Others out there?
