Come può testimoniare quasi chiunque abbia adottato un cane o un gatto da un canile, c'è qualcosa di speciale in un animale domestico salvato; è come se l'animale sentisse di aver ricevuto una seconda possibilità di vita. È certamente il caso di Juno, un pastore belga Malinois salvato da un canile pochi giorni prima dell'eutanasia. Ma da quando è arrivata a vivere con la sua famiglia ad Alcoa, nel Tennessee, Juno ha assunto il ruolo di soccorritrice per Lucas Hembree, un bambino di quattro anni.
Lucas soffre della sindrome di Sanfilippo, una malattia metabolica ereditaria causata dall'assenza o dal malfunzionamento di un enzima necessario per scomporre le molecole lunghe di zucchero. Con il progredire della malattia, i bambini perdono la capacità di parlare, camminare e mangiare. La malattia causa anche gravi danni neurologici che portano a comportamenti aggressivi, iperattività e convulsioni.
"La cosa più catastrofica che i genitori sentono quando scoprono che il loro bambino ha questa malattia è che non esiste una cura o un trattamento disponibile", afferma Chester, il padre di Lucas.
A meno che la situazione non cambi, non si prevede che Lucas sopravviva ai 15 anni e potrebbe essere in stato vegetativo già a otto. Consapevoli che ogni momento è prezioso, Chester e sua moglie Jennifer vogliono che il figlio viva quante più esperienze possibili, finché ha ancora la capacità di godersele.
Preghiera e perseveranza
Così, quando la malattia iniziò a mettere a dura prova le articolazioni di Lucas, Chester pensò di prendere un cane da assistenza per tenerlo fermo mentre camminava. "Mi dissero che un cane da assistenza sarebbe costato almeno 15.000 dollari e che Lucas non era un buon candidato a causa del peggioramento delle sue capacità e del suo comportamento", racconta Chester. "Mi rifiutai di accettare questa risposta".
Una combinazione di preghiera e perseveranza ha portato Chester a Juno. "Mi sono imbattuto in un post su di lei sul sito web di un gruppo di soccorso", racconta. "Ho sentito dentro di me la sensazione di dover andare a vedere questo cane."
Tutta la famiglia ha fatto il viaggio di due ore per incontrare Juno, che era tenuta in un rifugio del Tennessee orientale. "Era emaciata e mancavano pochi giorni all'eutanasia", racconta Chester. "Era stata consegnata al rifugio perché i suoi precedenti proprietari non capivano il Pastore Belga Malinois". Fortunatamente, Chester sì. Aveva imparato a conoscere e ad amare la razza anni prima, quando lavorava come agente di polizia.
"Aiutavo ad addestrare i cani K-9 della polizia, e i nostri cani erano dei Malinois Belga", racconta. "Amavo la loro voglia di lavorare e il loro atteggiamento 'non mollare mai'". Oltre a essere una scelta popolare per i cani poliziotto, la razza è spesso utilizzata in combattimento. Si ritiene, infatti, che il cane che aiutò i Navy SEAL a catturare Osama bin Laden fosse proprio un Malinois Belga.
Ricoperto di amore e affetto
Ma sebbene la razza abbia dimostrato la sua abilità in pattugliamento e in combattimento, Chester doveva essere sicuro che Juno fosse un cane da assistenza adatto al suo bambino. "L'ho messa al guinzaglio lento e ha camminato con me senza mai tirare", racconta Chester. "Poi è arrivato il test di Lucas. Si sono affezionati subito, come anime gemelle". Gli Hembree portarono Juno a casa e la ricopersero di amore e affetto.
"Volevo assicurarmi che avesse abbastanza tempo per adattarsi alla famiglia prima di iniziare l'addestramento formale", dice Chester. Eppure, fin dall'inizio, sembrava esserci qualcosa di istintivo nel loro rapporto. Un giorno, Chester notò Juno che girava intorno a Lucas mentre era sulla sedia a rotelle. "Piagnucolava e lo colpiva con il naso", racconta Chester. "Ho controllato i suoi livelli di ossigeno ed erano molto bassi". Dopo avergli dato l'ossigeno, Lucas è tornato alla normalità e Juno lo ha accolto con leccate e affetto.
"È stato allora che ho capito che era in grado di individuare i suoi cambiamenti neurologici", racconta Chester. "Ora ci avvisa quando Lucas sta per avere una crisi o se i suoi livelli di ossigeno scendono notevolmente. Lo ha salvato diverse volte." Juno è diventata letteralmente una spalla su cui Lucas può appoggiarsi quando cammina, e un'influenza calmante quando è agitato. E mentre Chester si assicura che Juno abbia del tempo libero, dice che è difficile convincerla a lasciare Lucas. "Non vedi l'uno senza l'altro vicino", dice. "Sembra davvero che fosse destino."

I am impressed reading the true story of Lucas , a 4 years little boy and his pet .I pray for you Lucas to live long . Nothing is impossible with GOD. Men give you only 15 years of life but GOD says HE heals you. GOD is watching you over your act of kindness.And He will heal you from your sickness. GOD Bless you, Lucas !!!

I've come to understand that my loving Miss Kitty Cody was a rescue cat (owner got sick and never came home) and very neurotic when she came to live w/me. She cried for a week but finally got used to me, her new home and lots of loving attention. I've never known such a loving cat and she sure senses my moods and communicates her needs & she know lots of words, like, "Do you want to go in the window?" If yes, she runs in the bathroom and jumps up to the window which I open for her - aw, fresh air! As a senior she is the best buddy ever, and I don't have to take her for walks in the cold outdoors.
Dogs are the most animals ,who love with all their hearts, the wonderful friend one can desire.

What an inspiring story. I have a beautiful dog Buddy. He has been my mate for nearly 18yrs. There was a time in my life when I was extremely ill and he was my only friend, as I did not want to burden others with my disabilities. He saw me through, gave me courage in his silent but strength giving manner. He knows all. He is deaf now and full of arthritus and still the most loving soul I will ever know. I thank him forever for the strength and friendship he gives me. I never wanted a dog but the day I met him as a pup it was love at first sight. He is my true soul mate. Thankyou to all the wonderful pets out there and the people who have the time to connect to them.
Unconditional love in the true sense is a dog and his mate.
