هو عداءٌ عالميٌّ من جنوب أفريقيا، يحمل الرقم القياسي العالمي في سباقات السرعة. وهي فتاةٌ شجاعةٌ في الخامسة من عمرها من إسيكس، إنجلترا. في سلسلةٍ مُلهمةٍ من الصور التي انتشرت بشكلٍ واسعٍ مؤخرًا، يتنافس الغريبان، اللذان لا يجمعهما سوى رفضٍ عنيدٍ لإيقافهما بسبب بترٍ مزدوج، في سباقٍ جريٍّ آليٍّ وديٍّ.
كان أوسكار بيستوريوس، بطل "بليد رانر" ، البالغ من العمر 25 عامًا، يبلغ من العمر 11 شهرًا فقط عندما اكتشف الأطباء عدم وجود عظام الشظية لديه، مما استدعى بتر ساقيه من أسفل الركبة. أما إيلي ماي تشاليس، فقد فقدت يديها وساقيها في عمر 16 شهرًا، بعد إصابتها بحالة حادة من التهاب السحايا.
على الرغم من أن إيلي زُوِّدت في البداية بأطراف اصطناعية عادية، إلا أن الطفلة وجدت صعوبة في المشي بها. كانت أرجل ألياف الكربون الأكثر تطورًا - مثل تلك التي يرتديها بيستوريوس - باهظة الثمن، لكن مجتمع إيلي دعمها، وجمع 15,000 دولار أمريكي اللازمة لاستبدالها. في عام 2009، أصبحت الطفلة البالغة من العمر خمس سنوات أصغر شخص يُزوَّد بأطراف اصطناعية من ألياف الكربون على الإطلاق.
وفي مضمار داخلي في إنفيلد، شمال لندن، تفوقت إيلي الصغيرة على بطل العداءة في جميع سباقاتها الأربعة التي بلغت مسافتها 15 مترًا، وسط هتافات شقيقتها التوأم صوفي، وشقيقيها الأكبر تيلا وكونور.
في إعلان تاريخي، مُنح بيستوريوس، الذي يركض باستخدام أطراف "تشيتا فليكس فوت" الخاصة، الإذن بالمشاركة في دورة الألعاب الأولمبية بلندن 2012، مُلغيًا بذلك حظرًا فرضته عليه محكمة التحكيم الرياضية. وكان الاتحاد الدولي لألعاب القوى قد قضت بعدم أهلية بيستوريوس للمشاركة في الألعاب لأن أطرافه "فليكس فوت" تُمثل ميزة غير عادلة. إلا أن المحكمة استعرضت أدلة من دراستين جديدتين (ومتضاربتين) قبل إصدار حكمها لصالحه.
تأهل بيستوريوس إلى نصف نهائي سباق 400 متر يوم الأحد، لكنه لم يتأهل إلى النهائيات. كان وقته، 46.54 ثانية، أبطأ بثانيتين من الفائز بالسباق، بطل العالم الحالي كيراني جيمس من غرينادا. وفي لفتة احترام وروح رياضية، عانق جيمس بيستوريوس بعد السباق وطلب منه تبادل أرقام سباقاته.
قال جيمس للصحفيين في اليوم السابق لنصف النهائي: " أراه مجرد رياضي آخر، منافس آخر . والأهم من ذلك، أراه شخصًا آخر. إنه شخص أُعجب به وأحترمه".
من جانبه، قال بيستوريوس في مقابلة مع برنامج TODAY إنه سيعتز بذكرياته الأولمبية "ما تبقى من حياته". وبينما كانت جدته البالغة من العمر 89 عامًا تشاهده من المدرجات، قال بيستوريوس: "سماع هدير الجماهير ومعرفة وجود هذا العدد الكبير من الناس خلفي جعل الأمر أكثر متعة".

This man is a very special person and so is Ellie. I pray they will both realize all that they can. Pistorius touched my heart and I doubt I will ever forget him.
