25歳の「ブレードランナー」オスカー・ピストリウスは、生後わずか11ヶ月の時に腓骨欠損が判明し、両脚の膝下切断が必要となりました。エリー・メイ・チャリスは生後16ヶ月で重度の髄膜炎に罹患し、両手両足を失いました。
エリーちゃんは当初、標準的な義足を装着していましたが、歩くのが困難でした。ピストリウス君が装着していたような、より高度なカーボンファイバー製の義足は高価でしたが、エリーちゃんのコミュニティは彼女を支え、義足の費用として1万5000ドルを集めました。2009年、 5歳だったエリーちゃんは、カーボンファイバー製の義足を装着した史上最年少の人物となりました。
北ロンドンのエンフィールドにある屋内トラックで行われたこのレースでは、幼いエリーちゃんが、双子の妹ソフィーちゃん、姉のタイラちゃん、姉のコナーちゃんの歓声の中、15メートル走の全4種目でチャンピオンの短距離走者に勝利した。
歴史的な発表となった今回の発表で、特殊なチーター・フレックスフット義肢を用いて走るピストリウスは、スポーツ仲裁裁判所（CAA）による出場禁止処分を覆し、2012年ロンドンオリンピックへの出場を許可された。国際陸上競技連盟（IAA）は、ピストリウスのフレックスフット義肢が不当なアドバンテージとなるため、オリンピック出場は認められないとの判決を下していた。しかし、 CAAは2つの新たな（そして矛盾する）研究の証拠を検討した上で、ピストリウスに有利な判決を下した。
ピストリウスは日曜日の400メートル走で準決勝に進出したものの、決勝進出は逃した。彼のタイムは46秒54で、予選優勝者であるグレナダの現世界チャンピオン、キラニ・ジェームスより2秒遅かった。 ジェームスは敬意とスポーツマンシップを示し、レース後ピストリウスを抱きしめ、ゼッケン交換を求めた。
「 彼をただのアスリート、もう一人の競技者として見ているだけです」とジェームズは準決勝前日に記者団に語った。「さらに重要なのは、彼をもう一人の人間として見ていることです。彼は私が尊敬し、憧れる人物です。」
ピストリウス自身も、TODAYショーのインタビューで、 オリンピックの思い出を「残りの人生」 大切にしたいと語った。89歳の祖母がスタンドから見守る中、ピストリウスは「観客の歓声を聞き、たくさんの人が私の後ろにいてくれたと感じたことで、より一層楽しかったです」と語った。

This man is a very special person and so is Ellie. I pray they will both realize all that they can. Pistorius touched my heart and I doubt I will ever forget him.
