25-aastane Oscar "Blade Runner" Pistorious oli kõigest 11-kuune, kui arstid avastasid tal puuduvad pindluud, mis nõudis mõlema jala põlvest allapoole amputeerimist. Ellie May Challis kaotas 16 kuu vanuselt pärast rasket meningiiti nii käed kui ka jalad.

Pistorious kvalifitseerus pühapäeval 400 meetri jooksu poolfinaali, kuid finaali ei pääsenud. Tema aeg, 46,54 sekundit, oli kaks sekundit aeglasem kui eeljooksu võitjal, valitseval maailmameistril Grenadast pärit Kirani Jamesil. Austuse ja sportlikkuse märgiks kallistas James Pistorioust pärast võistlust ning palus vahetada rinnanumbreid.
„ Ma näen teda lihtsalt kui teist sportlast, teist võistlejat ,“ ütles James ajakirjanikele päev enne poolfinaali. „Olulisem on see, et ma näen teda kui teist inimest. Ta on keegi, keda ma imetlen ja austan.“
Pistorious ütles omalt poolt saates TODAY antud intervjuus, et jääb olümpiamälestusi kalliks pidama „kogu ülejäänud eluks“. Kui tema 89-aastane vanaema tribüünilt pealt vaatas, ütles Pistorious: „Rahvasöölemise kuulmine ja teadmine, et minu taga oli nii palju inimesi, tegi selle veelgi nauditavamaks.“
