정말 축복받은 경험을 한 것 같아요. 평소에는 온순한 고양이들 중 한 마리였던 제 야생 고양이 무리의 한 마리가 플라스틱 병에 머리에 꽂혔어요. 머리 전체가 딱딱한 플라스틱으로 뒤덮여 있어서 먹고 마실 수가 없었죠. 토요일 밤에 처음 그 모습을 봤어요. 몇 시간 동안 그 고양이가 저를 믿게 해 달라고, 제가 병을 빼낼 수 있을 만큼 가까이 다가오도록 설득하려고 애썼지만, 완전히 취약하고 완전히 패닉 상태에 빠진 그 고양이는 제가 가까이 다가가는 것을 허락하지 않을 만큼 겁이 많았어요.
다음 날 저녁, 저는 수건을 덮고 두꺼운 담요를 덮어서 고양이를 혼란스럽게 하려고 했습니다. 그래야 제대로 잡을 수 있을지도 모른다는 생각에 말이죠. 하지만 고양이는 너무 빠르고 교활해서 그런 재주는 통하지 않았습니다. 남자친구는 그날 밤 늦게 큰 바구니를 들고 나와서 겁먹은 고양이를 잡으려고 애썼지만, 결국 고양이는 완전히 도망가 버렸고, 결국 어디에도 보이지 않았습니다.
하바하트 덫을 밤새도록 놓아두기로 했지만, 그것도 소용없었습니다(다만 가임기 암컷을 얻을 수 있어서 병원에 데려가 중성화 수술과 예방 접종을 받을 수 있었으니, 완전히 손해는 아니었습니다). 퇴근 후 저녁 7시쯤부터 새벽 5시까지 매시간 수색했습니다. 하지만 나타나지 않았습니다. 제가 상상할 수 있는 최악의 방식으로 죽었을 거라고 생각했습니다. 한때 제 다리에 바싹 붙어 저녁을 기다리던 고양이를 놓쳤다는 생각에 정신이 아찔했습니다. 고양이를 놓아줄 수도, 잠도 잘 수 없었습니다. 혹시 그 끔찍한 병 안에 갇혀 아직 살아 있을지도 모른다는 생각에 마음이 아팠습니다.
한밤중에 방문객이 와서 도와주다
음, 오늘 밤도 평소처럼 새벽 1시쯤에 저녁 식사를 차려놓고 밖으로 나르자, 우리 고양이들이 참을성 있게 기다리고 있었습니다. 고양이들을 데리고 건물에서 꽤 떨어진 평소 자리로 가서 식사를 차려놓고 다시 걸어가려던 참에 갑자기 나타난 한 여자가 제게 다가왔습니다. 고양이들에게 먹이를 줬다가 여러 번 혼났던 터라, 이웃집 여자에게 또 한 번 혼날까 봐 마음을 단단히 먹었습니다. 그녀는 저에게 방금 길고양이들에게 먹이를 줬냐고 퉁명스럽게 물었습니다. 마지못해 줬다고 고백하자, 그녀는 저를 만나서 얼마나 기뻤는지, 그리고 단지 안에서 자신 말고도 고양이들을 아끼고 잘 지내도록 도와주려는 사람이 있다는 사실에 얼마나 감사한지 열변을 토했습니다. 물론 저는 매우 안도했고, 그녀를 만나서 정말 기뻤습니다. 마침내… 길고양이의 동료가 생긴 셈이니까요!
그녀는 자신의 이름이 로즈라고 말해 주었고, 밤늦게까지 이어진 활기찬 만남 내내 로즈와 저는 지역 고양이들을 돕는 경험담을 나누었습니다. 로즈는 이 단지에 몇 년 동안 살았고 (저는 이 집에 온 지 얼마 안 됐지만), 백신 접종과 중성화 수술을 받은 고양이들을 관리하기 위해 그녀가 얼마나 노력했는지는 투명하게 밝혔지만, 그녀 역시 여러 이웃 세입자들에게 괴롭힘을 당했고, 심지어 고양이들에게 먹이를 준다는 이유로 건물 관리인에게 퇴거 위협을 받았다는 사실도 알게 되었습니다. 말할 필요도 없이, 로즈와 저는 금세 친구가 되었습니다.
그렇게 우리가 수다를 떨고 있는데, 병에 든 고양이가 나타났어요! 로즈는 고양이가 적어도 목요일(거의 6일) 전부터 병에 갇혀 있었다고 말했어요! 로즈는 고양이를 구하려고 몇 시간을 보냈고, 그 과정에서 고양이에게 물렸다고 했죠. 더 이상 시도하고 싶지도 않다고, 주말 내내 실패한 시도 때문에 울었다고 했어요. 로즈의 슬픔을 온전히 이해했어요. 이 시점에서 고양이를 잡는 건 불가능해 보였고, 또 한 번 실패하면 우리 둘 다 더 큰 고통을 겪을 거라는 걸 알았죠. 하지만 또 한 번 시도하지 않고는 우리 둘 다 병에서 벗어날 수 없을 거라는 것도 알고 있었어요.
아무 계획도 없이, 나는 그냥 바닥에 앉아 열쇠를 짤랑거리기 시작했다 (일명 야생 고양이 저녁 종). 평소 키우는 수컷 고양이 중 한 마리는 사람들과 따로 식사하는 걸 고집하는 좀 속물적인 성격이었기에, 스웨터 주머니 안에는 작은 사료 봉지가 들어 있었다 (늘 그렇듯 근처 나무 아래에서 "고고한 고양이"에게 나눠주려고 했던 거였다). 주머니에서 사료 봉지를 꺼내 열고 열쇠와 함께 흔들기 시작했다. 깡마른 머리를 가진 고양이는 그 소리와 냄새에 거의 최면에 걸린 듯했다. 나는 그가 다가와서 내가 도와주기를 간절히 바랐다. 1분쯤 지났을까, 이제 어쩔 줄 몰라 꼼짝도 못 하고 굶주린 고양이 뒤로 로즈가 기어오는 것이 보였다. 나는 열쇠와 사료를 흔들어 소리를 점점 더 크게 만들어 고양이가 시선을 돌리거나 로즈의 기어가는 모습에 눈치채지 못하게 했다. 마침내, 야생 고양이처럼 로즈는 그에게 달려들어 뒤에서 그를 붙잡았다.
고양이가 로즈의 맨팔을 마구 휘둘렀습니다. 놀랍게도 로즈는 고양이를 꼭 붙잡았습니다. 저는 벌떡 일어나 "놓지 마!"라고 소리쳤습니다. 하지만 제가 병을 잡으려는 순간, 고양이가 로즈의 팔에서 뛰쳐나와 쏜살같이 달아났습니다. 화가 난 로즈와 저는 거의 동시에 몇 마디 욕설을 퍼부었고, 갑자기 고양이가 병을 들고 있다는 사실을 깨닫고는 비참함에 휩싸여 쓰러지기 시작했습니다!
그는 마침내 자유로워졌어요!
맙소사, 제가 그것을 가지고 있어요!
격렬한 몸싸움 와중에도 로즈는 어떻게든 병을 빼낼 수 있었다! 로즈는 손에 들린 더러운 용기를 멍하니 바라보며 믿을 수 없다는 듯 중얼거렸다. "맙소사, 내가 가져왔어. 병을 가져왔어!"
나는 그녀를 껴안았다. 이 여자는 몇 분 전에 낯선 사람… 내 새 친구이자 고양이 구조 "범죄"의 파트너, 그리고 이제는 내 영웅이 되었다! 새벽 1시, 우리는 아파트 단지 주차장에서 서로를 꽉 껴안고 서 있었다. 그녀의 팔뚝에 난 갓 난 상처에서 피가 흘러내리고 있었다. 아직도 믿기지 않는다. 이 모든 일이 거의 불가능해 보인다. 타이밍, 모든 행운, 믿기 어려울 정도로 좋았다. 마치 복권에 당첨된 것 같았다. 브로드웨이보다 더 짜릿한 스릴을 만끽했다. 그리고 자헤드는 병 없이 자유로웠다!

I totally understand saving those precious little souls. Attached is Sister Chic. She was found by my daughter and her friend after being mauled by a dog. It bit her tail off and messed up her back and ears pretty bad. She has six toes on all four feet and is rather unique looking. She has such a personality! In the beginning I told my daughter we'd keep her until we could find her a home. Well, guess what? She found a home alright, with me. We've had her 5 years now and I can't imagine life without her. She is my little soul mate. Guess it was in the cards. We are meant to be together, Sister Chic and I!

Love this story. And thank you to the commenter below who cautions people about their discarded containers, which are indeed a hazard to wildlife. There is a young deer living behind my property who has a length of PVC pipe stuck on this leg. He must have stepped on it and it went right over his hoof. Now he's stuck with it for life. Poor guy. There is no way to catch this wild deer and I am hoping that he will be able to adapt to the plastic pipe and that it won't get infected.
I too rescued a feral with a plastic jar on her head. She would frequent my deck late in the night for a meal, Always Frightened and would scurry off quickly if she noticed me looking. One evening as i peeked out, I spotted her under my car with the jar on her head. I didn't think too much of it other than a small chuckle. To my dismay, she was on my deck still the next morning with the jar still on her head. Fearing the worst for her at that point i proceeded to sneak up on her and try to grab the jar. Didn't work. She ran away , the plastic jar clunking as she frantically ran . Each day I would see her on the property somewhere during my search. Day three, I was alerted by the neighbor's Jack Russel to their barn. I approached thinking that she must be there as the dog was very insistent on entering. Oh what a surprise, I found her stash. Three orange tigers, one silver tiger and a calico, all about three maybe four weeks old and very hungry. Day four and five, no luck, didn't even see her. I though she had perished. Day six came. With some help in the search we located her in the overgrowth and of course she got away. Later that same day, I went back to the area where she had been spotted earlier and to my surprise she was there. I called for help again from my family and one of my "crazy cat lady" friends, Carrie Bartz of Shadow Cat Advocates. Together we surrounded the area. Being cornered little miss ran down in a groundhog hole. Nothing left to do but dig now. After an hour of digging we were able to open the small cavern and force her into a trap. Thank God Carrie was there with her unrelenting grip and guidance. We took her to the clinic where they were finally able to free her from the plastic prison. Friends flocked in to see the cute kittens and they have all been adopted to wonderful homes. Being a feral, momma was very stand offish. While feeding the babies in the other room she heard them and started calling out and after two times before, and against advice, I took the three remaining kitties to her. Instantaneously she loved on them and is now allowing me to hold her and pet her. I think I made the right decision. She has been tested and vaccinated and is now joining our home. Oh and btw Her name is now Mayo.

What a wonderful story--and thank you for being so persistent in your rescue efforts. "Jar Head" kitty has one heck of a will to live! Nonetheless, he must have been scared out of his mind not being able to see where he was going, eat, or drink. Thank goodness he didn't suffocate!
I think there is also a lesson in here about why we can do with less plastic bottles and jars in the world and why the thoughtful thing to do is either reuse the containers or (as a last resort) recycle them. Please don't toss plastic bottles and containers onto landfills or vacant lots--they are harmful to feral kitties.

How kind of you and Rose to save this kitty, and know you'll be right back at it. I once knew two old lady cat and dog lovers. One of them was quite wealthy, and they would both hop in her Cadillac and drive around saving neglected and abandoned animals, even going so far as to steal chained up dogs in yards that had no food, water, shade or warmth. She said she didn't care if she was arrested because she had plenty of money and plenty of lawyers. All the evacuees were taken first to the vet, then to the groomers, and home to the best any of us could wish for, until perfect permanent homes could be found. I always thought that if my ship ever came in, it would be a great way to spend my life. I"m 71 now, still without money, but still rescuing.

OMG, this reminds me of my own cat who I originally thought was feral. One terribly hot summer he got his head stuck in a plastic bag. Lucky for him it had a hole that he could breath through but otherwise he was encased. We tried in vain to help him, but he finally managed to get out of it. He turned out to be a traumatized abandoned cat and I slowly befriended him - he's our beloved pet today. Sooo, glad you were able to free that poor cat from the jar!!
