公共交通機関を利用する多くの人は、金曜日の午後、似たような帰宅の旅を経験したのではないでしょうか。揺れる地下鉄にしがみつきながら、不安な気持ちで。心の中には悲劇が渦巻いていました。「やっと金曜日だ」なんて言う人はいませんでした。ただ「なぜ神様はこんなことを？」「神様、どうかお願いします」と祈るばかりでした。
私たちは皆、まるで一つの心、一つの思いを共有しているかのように、携帯電話でニュースを読んでいた。コネチカット州ニュータウンから伝わってくるニュースを聞き、読み、見て、感じ、深い悲しみを共有していた。
妻に電話して様子を尋ねたところ、彼女自身も涙ながらに、娘たちを小学校（サンディフック小学校から約200マイル離れている）に迎えに行った時、そこにいた親たちは皆、目に涙を浮かべていたと話してくれた。
我が国はこれまでにも悲劇に直面してきたが、今回は何かが違った。季節のせいかもしれない。あるいは、秋の選挙の緊張感と（時折）激しい非難からようやく解放された後、不意を突かれたのかもしれない。あるいは、犠牲者26人のうち20人が子供だったという事実のせいかもしれない。幼い子供たちだったのだ。
私の心は、いつも以上に重荷を感じていた。重荷を感じるというのは、悲しんだり心配したりするのとは違う。重荷は、行動と動きを求めるものだ。
これは重い問題だ。そして、おそらく私たちのほとんどがその重みを感じているだろう。
多くの人と同じように、私も何か行動を起こしたいと思いました。この出来事が、ニュースで一時的に取り上げられるだけの、ただの悲しい出来事で終わってほしくなかったのです。数日後には、また別のことで気が散ってしまうような事態は避けたかった。忘れて逃げ出したくなかった。何か行動を起こしたかったのです。
私はすぐに――おそらく早すぎたのかもしれないが――ソーシャルメディアに目を向け、何千、何百万もの人々と共に、傷つき、怒りを表明した。もしかしたら、オンラインで集まることで、私たちの中には企業活動によって間接的に受けたトラウマを乗り越えることができたのかもしれない。
しかし、私の言葉だけでは十分ではないように感じた。
私は政治家ではないので、銃による暴力を完全に根絶することはできないかもしれないが、確実に抑制できるであろう、恥ずべきほど遅れている政策変更に直接取り組むことはできません。また、裕福でもないので、私たちの記憶に永遠に刻まれるであろう、あの寒々としたニューイングランドの朝に命を落とした26人の葬儀費用を負担することもできません。
しかし、私にできることは祈ることだけでした。そして祈っているうちに、心の奥底で霊的な活動への呼びかけを感じました。断食をするようにという呼びかけを感じたのです。そこで、これから27日間断食します。ニュータウンで失われた命、銃撃犯の命も含めて、一人につき一日ずつです。
断食は以前から私の精神生活の一部でしたが、断食は自分と神だけの内密な行為であり、見せびらかすものでも、注目を集めるための行為でもないため、断食していることを他人に決して言ってはいけないと常に教えられてきました。しかし今回は、平和のために断食をしていることを公表することで、私（たち）がこの問題に精神的に深く向き合うだけでなく、周りの人々にも行動を起こすよう促せるのではないかと思いました。
個人の内面的な行動が周囲の世界に影響を与えるなどと考えるのは、おそらく非常識なことだろう。しかし、歴史はそうではないことを示している。おそらく世界で最も大きな変化をもたらした人々は、しばしば自らの深い精神生活の源泉から力を引き出し、周囲の世界に慈悲、思いやり、そして愛を溢れさせてきた。インド、南アフリカ、チベット、南米、ヨーロッパ各地、そしてここアメリカ合衆国において、公民権、自由、平和を求める様々な運動の中で、自由、人権、そして人々の心の変化のために闘ってきた人々は、断食の持つ偉大な力を知っているのだ。
ですから、私は心に4つの主要な祈りを捧げながら断食をしています。
1. 私は、我が国が銃暴力との長く苦しい道のりにおいて突破口を開くことができるよう、断食と祈りを捧げています。特に、国の指導者たちが勇気を持って、国、州、そして都市の銃規制法を制定、可決、そして改正してくれることを願っています。
2. 私は、身近な人で自宅に銃を所有している人（特に護身用として所有している人）が、安全に銃を処分してくれるよう、断食と祈りを捧げています。研究によると、銃を所有することは、身の安全を高めるどころか、家庭内での銃による暴力事件の発生確率を高めることが分かっています。所有している銃を売却したり処分したりすることは、私たちの身近な世界で変化をもたらす力強い行動です。また、銃を所有している家族や友人と話し合い、自宅から銃を撤去するよう促すことも、私たち一人ひとりができる重要な行動です。
3. 私は断食と祈りを通して、銃による暴力にまつわる、そしてそれに至る痛ましい状況が解決されることを願います。心が傷つき、暴力へと駆り立てられている人々の人生に変化が訪れ、人生の軌道が変わることを願います。精神的、感情的、そして霊的な健康問題を抱えている人々が、必要なケアを受けられることを願います。そして、私たち一人ひとりが、世界にもっと多くの善を広めるためにできる限りのことをすることを願います。
4．最後に、生徒たちを守った勇敢で素晴らしい教師たちの姿に、私たちの心が深く感動し、勇気づけられるよう、断食と祈りを捧げます。彼らは、この国における銃暴力の減少と根絶に必要な勇気の模範を示してくれています。
もうすぐ新年です。ここ2年間、私は奉仕の精神と社会意識の高い新年の抱負を奨励するプロジェクト（ Resolution 13 ）に参加してきました。今年はどんな抱負を立てようか迷っていましたが、今は決心しました。今年は、国内および世界における銃暴力に関する意識を高め、変化をもたらすことに奉仕活動を捧げます。そして、まずは断食から始めます。銃暴力に関して最悪の国の一つである我が国を、平和で知られる国へと変えようと活動している素晴らしい人々のグループと、腕を組んで行進します。
もしそう感じられたなら、あなたも断食を決意していただければ幸いです。断食とは、食事を断つことかもしれません（必ず事前に医師にご相談ください）。あるいは、インターネット、ソーシャルメディア、テレビなど、他のものを断つことでも良いでしょう。断食は、世界の主要な宗教のほぼすべてが何世紀にもわたって用いてきた、強力な精神的手段です。そして、祈りとともに、変化のために行動するよう導かれたと感じている精神的活動家たちが用いる強力な手段でもあります。そして、それは実際に効果を発揮します。
断食をしたくない方もいるでしょう。ご自宅や学校で話し合いの場を設けてみてはいかがでしょうか。あるいは、政治指導者に行動を促す嘆願書を回覧するお手伝いをしたり、礼拝所で勉強会を開いたり、祈ったり、説教したり、歌ったり、踊ったり、絵を描いたり、文章を書いたりして、このことについて表現してみてはいかがでしょうか。あるいは、全く別の方法でも構いません。
銃による暴力は、連邦議会やホワイトハウス、市役所にいる人たちだけが取り組むべき問題ではありません。銃による暴力への対処法について、私と意見が異なる方もいるでしょう。それは構いません。もし、銃による暴力への対処法として、他の方法の方が効果的だとお考えなら、反対意見の道を阻もうとするのではなく、そちらに力を注いでください。重要なのは、どのような方法であれ、この問題に必ず取り組まなければならないということです。これは、すべての人にとっての問題です。そして、誰もが何かできることがあります。私はまず、これから27日間、口を閉ざすことから始めます。あなたはどうしますか？

Inspired by Rev. Charles Howard ..i am joining in solidarity with the intent I will see how I can better serve our world and deliver a world that will continue for 7 generations and protect our children from living in fear.
My heart weighs heavy today. 7 years ago, I lost my son half way through my pregnancy. I had to go to a clinic to have him removed from my womb because they were not sure if I would not survive delivery. Many at the clinic were choosing to “conclude” their baby’s life. I could not understand why a mother would choose this but I also had more compassion that day for those women then I could ever imagine. While, this does not compare to your parents loss, it only gives me a slight understanding of their pain and the road that lies before them to heal and make sense of all this.
I cannot imagine why Adam killed any of you other than his soul, mind and being were not at rest and/or maybe because our collective minds are not at rest. I see that these senseless crimes and wars must be stopped and we cannot keep turning the cheek. I realize that the clearer our hearts and minds are...is possibly the only way to cultivate authentic peace on earth. Today, I will begin a modified fast and prayer/meditation in honor of all of you and all of US that continue to suffer. With the intention that we may all remember the causes of happiness. Since, I have two children...I do not know if I can manage a full fast so I have selected these foods in honor of you all and asking mother earth, father sky and father sun for some wisdom to be returned to me so I can assist in healing self and taking action to return peace to the world around me.
Rice...for may you connect me deeper to the earth and nourish all of these children and women during their passage through the bardo and impart a better understanding of peace on my soul.
Sunflower seeds...may you remove the toxins from my mind, body and soul...and remind these women and children to follow the White LIGHT.
Living Tea...keep educating me...clearing my mind and clearing my heart. Guide these souls as you have guided me.
Kale...purify my blood, purify my meditations, purify my heart
Carrots...help me see more clearly and lead these sweet souls to their next...grant them the necessary guides to find their way without strife.
May my daily prayers and silence assist you, your family, your friends, and all of us to remember that we truly can live in peace and heal & love from within.

I will pass this article to everyone I possible can so that they can think of ways to 'fast' as you have stated here -- whether it be food, drink, computer, etc. I believe we all can do something to help to end the violence that our society has up until now heard about, but not really paid much attention to until it happens to them directly, or a magnitude such as this tragedy. The violence has weighed heavily upon my heart for some time now, and I've always wondered what I could do to help eradicate/alleviate it. With so much violence aimed at our youth in video games, television and all the ways media has invaded our lives, it is going to take a miracle to penetrate this evil force that seem to have overtaken our nation. Where is GOD is always my first question when I heard of such tragedy. Whether it is one person killed by guns, or many. Why have we allowed such evil to have overtaken our society? This has been coming for many years now, and it has reared its ugly head time, and time again. We have got to finally 'get it.' Let's take back our country from the forces who say we have the 'right to bear arms.' I've never wanted to own a gun, or anyone in my family for that matter. We've gotten along without arms all this time, and have never had the need for them - except once when my grandfather had to assist a neighbor in shooting a snake that had gotten into their home, and I'm talking 50 years ago. Now 50 years later, we see what the 'RIGHT to Bear Arms' has gotten us. Nowhere, but continuous violence and killing for nothing. Now what?

I agree with Sundi. It is not gun control we need to worry about but the condition of people's minds. This obviously was a deeply distress and paranoid family including Adam's mother who had deep fears regarding social and economic demise. She was known to be a "survivalist". That simple fact shows how much fear she had about her world and the people around her. Didn't anyone care then that she needed help. The guns didn't get up and shoot those people someone in very deep despair did. And yet no one noticed or cared before this horrible day.

after study has shown that psychotic episodes are caused by nutritional
deficiencies in the brain 90% of the time, and they usually start when
the child is very young. For the other 10% yes, look into drugs, but use them carefully, slowly, discontinue at the first sign of violence or depression. It's the drugs that change the chemistry of the brain and move
the thoughts toward suicide and violence: It's easy enough to do a
little research, but the news media will NOT be reporting on the
connection between pharmaceuticals and violence.

I appreciate the desire to fast to bring attention to gun control. No doubt the Rev's heart and soul are in the right place. But I sincerely believe the discussion about guns is not the one we need to be having right now.
[Hide Full Comment]The world is old,truly the world is old and totally disorganized that social values and compassion for fellow human had faded.just as treasures are uncovered from the earth,so virtue appears from good deeds,and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. this is the time we activate our spiritual awareness so to avoid innocent souls from perishing.the question is why does it happen prior to election and after election? our politician must answer it...they can not use innocent souls to pacify their gods for power gains.
A great heart-touching piece on this extremely heart-rendering tragedy, the impact of which is felt by all peace-loving, God's people all over the world, not only in the US, but even me in Ghana in Africa. When I heard about the shootings I was filled with helpless rage and despair. Then I thought about all the other children all over the world who suffer and die needlessly. I can't prevent some tragedies. But I CAN prevent others. So I set up a monthly donation to the Against Malaria Foundation which will save the lives of small children all over the world, month after month. I also reflected that we grieve because we love. But it is all too easy to take love for granted and to show anger, frustration to our children. So in addition to donating, I am renewing my commitment to parenting with lovingkindness and gratitude in recognition of how blessed I am to have children to love.
