Antes de empezar este blog, publiqué esto en mi enlace de Facebook de Berkeley Community Acupuncture. Tuvo una acogida muy positiva, así que me gustaría volver a publicarlo aquí:
Hoy, después de recibir acupuntura durante mi turno de donaciones, una paciente me preguntó por qué estaba regalando tratamientos tan increíbles. "¿No valoras tus habilidades?", preguntó. "¿No quieres exigir que otros también valoren tus habilidades? ¿No quieres que te muestren respeto pagándote lo que vales?". Entonces vio mi expresión de perplejidad y añadió: "Oh, veo que intentas arreglar el mundo. Intentas ayudar a la gente necesitada porque ellos carecen de lo que necesitan. Eso es bueno de tu parte". Esperó una respuesta, pero me quedé sin palabras. Había tantas cosas fuera de lugar en lo que me dijo que no sabía por dónde empezar, así que, en lugar de eso, incliné la cabeza ligeramente como para asentir. Sonrió, depositó $5 en nuestra alcancía y se fue. He estado pensando en lo que dijo desde entonces.
Hago lo que hago y no hay cantidad de dinero que nadie pueda darme que me haga sentir que se ajusta a lo que ofrezco. Ni 5 dólares, ni 5000 dólares. Porque lo que ofrezco es inconmensurable. Lo que ofrezco soy yo mismo, y no solo se refleja en mi práctica de la medicina china, sino también en cómo gestiono mi negocio. Es lo que ha evolucionado a lo largo de mis 16 años de reflexión sobre la medicina y la salud, y cómo me gustaría influir en el mundo en el que vivo y ser influenciado por él. Es un reflejo de mi comprensión de la salud y de nuestra conexión con los demás.
Mi práctica refleja mi fe en la abundancia, la confianza y la conexión que es posible en el mundo en que vivimos, así como en las profundas capacidades curativas de la medicina china. Me cautiva su simplicidad, su delicadeza, su humildad, su accesibilidad, su profunda profundidad, su sanación silenciosa. Me anima (sobre todo en estos tiempos) poder ofrecer un entorno donde cinco personas completamente desconocidas puedan acostarse juntas para echar una siesta, relajarse y sanar juntas, sin ataduras. Y me sorprende que, día tras día, la gente venga a hacer precisamente eso. Eso es confianza. Eso es sanación.
Desde esta comprensión, el valor y la valía adquieren perspectivas muy diferentes. Es solo porque comprendo el profundo valor de lo que hago que lo ofrezco libremente. No gratis, libremente. No hago esto para arreglar un mundo roto ni para ayudar a quienes lo necesitan. El mundo no está roto; lo que la gente pueda o no necesitar está más allá de mi comprensión. Simplemente hago esto porque es la expresión más natural de quién me he convertido y de quién soy.

To give for free or give freely - the most brilliant distinction ever made is here in your beautiful prose. Thankyou.
I offered yoga for free for two years while I became a better teacher. I loved to share my experiences with yoga in making people feel better. Many people asked me these same questions and told me that I would have better attendance and more reliable students once I started charging. I am charging now, a nominal fee, but was just as happy teaching for free except that it became embarrassing only after someone told me it should be. The weight we place in others opinions is enormous. When we come from our hearts, it feels good. Keep coming from your heart. When it's time to charge, you will be more than entitled to charge. We have to work in a culture that places value on everything in the form of money. But you can not place a value on generosity and love. The woman likely felt guilty, wanted to tell you that you were worth more than she was about to pay you, and in turn took your peace of mind. Don't let the opinions of others guide you, follow your heart.
I am reminded of Jesus' words...
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
Amen! So beautifully stated. Freely giving does not devalue it ADDS Value! Hugs to you and thank you for the healing you share through your work. As a Storyteller, I also Freely Give in order to offer people the chance to share their stories, often previously voiceless or powerless. It is an Amazing world we live in. Grateful!
