El gran mestre zen Thich Nhat Hanh ha escrit de manera meravellosa sobre per què aprendre a estimar els altres comença amb aprendre a estimar-nos a nosaltres mateixos, un sentiment que el cínic modern reactiu podria descartar com el farratge buit dels llibres d'autoajuda, però que una reflexió més acurada revela com a profundament verídic i profundament incòmode. Què significa, al cap i a la fi, estimar-se a un mateix, sobretot si aspirem a ser altruistes i generosos, i a superar la closca il·lusòria de l'ego que anomenem jo ?
Això és el que el poeta i dramaturg caribeny Derek Walcott (n. 23 de gener de 1930) —un escriptor d'una destresa poètica tan extraordinària que el seu Premi Nobel de Literatura de 1992 sembla una mesura totalment inadequada del seu domini i mesmerisme— aborda amb una lluminositat lateral en un poema titulat "Amor després de l'amor", que es troba a la seva obra Poemes complets: 1948–1984 ( biblioteca pública ).
En un episodi d'arxiu d'On Being titulat "Obrint-se a les nostres vides", el pioner de la consciència plena Jon Kabat-Zinn llegeix l'obra mestra de Walcott, sens dubte un dels poemes més grans i commovedors mai escrits. Gaudiu-ne:

Great site. Look forward to the daily post. Only to add (if it doesn't, delete) to the front page quote by Shakyamuni Buddha it's interesting that it's a transliteration of the Pali Canon:
Searching all directions
with one’s awareness,
one finds no one dearer
than oneself.
In the same way, others
are fiercely dear to themselves.
So one should not hurt others
if one loves oneself.
The subtle difference is that self-hate is pretty much unknown outside the West. Thank you.
