Il grande maestro Zen Thich Nhat Hanh ha scritto splendidamente sul perché imparare ad amare gli altri inizi imparando ad amare noi stessi – un sentimento che il cinico moderno e reattivo potrebbe liquidare come un argomento vuoto nei libri di auto-aiuto, ma che una riflessione più attenta rivela profondamente veritiero e profondamente scomodo. Cosa significa, dopotutto, amare se stessi – soprattutto se aspiriamo a essere altruisti e generosi, e a superare l' illusorio guscio dell'ego che chiamiamo sé ?
È ciò che il poeta e drammaturgo caraibico Derek Walcott (n. 23 gennaio 1930) — uno scrittore di tale straordinaria abilità poetica che il suo premio Nobel per la letteratura del 1992 appare una misura del tutto inadeguata della sua maestria e del suo fascino — affronta con un luminoso barlume laterale in una poesia intitolata "Love After Love", contenuta nella sua raccolta di poesie: 1948–1984 ( biblioteca pubblica ).
In un episodio d'archivio di On Being intitolato "Aprirsi alle nostre vite", il pioniere della mindfulness Jon Kabat-Zinn legge il capolavoro di Walcott, senza dubbio una delle poesie più grandi e toccanti mai scritte. Buona lettura:

Great site. Look forward to the daily post. Only to add (if it doesn't, delete) to the front page quote by Shakyamuni Buddha it's interesting that it's a transliteration of the Pali Canon:
Searching all directions
with one’s awareness,
one finds no one dearer
than oneself.
In the same way, others
are fiercely dear to themselves.
So one should not hurt others
if one loves oneself.
The subtle difference is that self-hate is pretty much unknown outside the West. Thank you.
