"Zit. Geniet van je leven."
De grote zenleraar Thich Nhat Hanh heeft prachtig geschreven over waarom leren van anderen houden begint met leren van onszelf te houden – een sentiment dat de reactieve moderne cynicus misschien afdoet als een leeg verhaal voor zelfhulpboeken, maar dat bij nadere beschouwing diep waarachtig en diep ongemakkelijk blijkt te zijn. Wat betekent jezelf liefhebben eigenlijk – vooral als we ernaar streven onzelfzuchtig en genereus te zijn en de illusoire ego-schil die we een zelf noemen te ontgroeien?
Dat is wat de Caribische dichter en toneelschrijver Derek Walcott (geboren op 23 januari 1930) — een schrijver met zo'n buitengewone poëtische bekwaamheid dat zijn Nobelprijs voor Literatuur uit 1992 een volstrekt ontoereikende maatstaf voor zijn meesterschap en hypnotisme lijkt — met een stralende zijdelingse glans aanpakt in een gedicht getiteld "Love After Love", te vinden in zijn Collected Poems: 1948–1984 ( openbare bibliotheek ).
In een archiefuitzending van On Being getiteld "Opening to Our Lives" leest mindfulnesspionier Jon Kabat-Zinn Walcotts meesterwerk voor – ongetwijfeld een van de grootste, meest ontroerende gedichten ooit geschreven. Geniet ervan:

Great site. Look forward to the daily post. Only to add (if it doesn't, delete) to the front page quote by Shakyamuni Buddha it's interesting that it's a transliteration of the Pali Canon:
Searching all directions
with one’s awareness,
one finds no one dearer
than oneself.
In the same way, others
are fiercely dear to themselves.
So one should not hurt others
if one loves oneself.
The subtle difference is that self-hate is pretty much unknown outside the West. Thank you.
