艺术家马克·巴罗内为了一个他坚信的事业，耗尽了自己的退休积蓄。现在，他希望和他一样热爱动物的人们能够伸出援手，帮助他实现这个梦想。
2011年，巴罗内的生活发生了意想不到的转变。他的伴侣玛丽娜·德尔文告诉他，美国每天约有5500只狗在收容所被安乐死。德尔文联系了美国所有大型动物保护协会，得知每年有400万到600万只狗被安乐死。“由于收容所无需上报被安乐死的动物数量，这只是一个大概的估计，”她说。（据美国防止虐待动物协会（ASPCA）称，美国收容所安乐死的动物数量已从2011年的260万只下降到150万只（67万只狗和86万只猫）。该非营利组织表示，数量下降的部分原因是动物被领养的数量增加以及流浪动物被送回主人身边。）
动物爱好者巴罗内被这些统计数据震惊了，他决定绘制5500只在收容所被安乐死的健康犬的肖像，以此来说明每天有多少生命因此逝去。“我们认为用视觉方式呈现这些肖像至关重要，”他说。
巴罗内和德尔文创建了一个名为“狗狗行动”的非营利组织。

《狗狗的善举》的下一阶段是建立一座“慈悲博物馆”，用于展出全部5500幅画作。该博物馆还将包含教育功能。
巴罗内表示：“实际空间至少需要5000到8000平方英尺，因此成本估算将在75万美元到160万美元之间。我们愿意在任何能够满足我们以及慷慨捐助者需求的城市建立博物馆。”
与此同时，德尔文和巴罗内继续在全国各地的学校开设艺术课程，以此“播撒同情的种子”。
“我们的目标是与学校合作，开发并创建一个专注于以艺术促进社会变革的艺术项目，”居住在新墨西哥州圣达菲的巴罗内说道。“学生们会了解收容所动物的悲惨境遇和真实处境。在他们进行研究和讨论之后，我们会与他们一起创作震撼人心的艺术作品/木刻版画。然后，我们会教他们如何将这些作品转化为可用于筹款和提高公众意识、拯救生命的产品。”
学生艺术项目筹集的资金一半用于支持学区的艺术项目；另一半则捐给动物福利组织。
一部名为《犬之行为》（An Act of Dog）的纪录片将在PBS电视台首播，由Sagacity City Productions制作，届时将有更多人了解巴罗内。该片详细记录了他的艺术历程。据制片人邦妮·席尔瓦透露，影片目前已进入后期制作的最后阶段。
巴罗内表示，无论未来如何，描绘了这么多狗狗的悲惨结局，让他成为了一个更好的人。
“我非常关心那些无法发声的人，并致力于向孩子们展示如何运用自身能力和创造力来创造一个更充满爱心的世界。”

The saddest thing I see and feel is that the vast majority of these portraits as well as the no-kill shelters where I live in the Erie, PA area ( the A.N.N.A. shelter & the Humane Society) are filled with mixed Pit Bull dogs. They are either abandoned, surrendered or captured by Animal Control. I "rescued" a mixed pit last December 2016. He is a surrendered perhaps year old pup. I love him so much but he has definite issues which I am desperately working on. It is not all easy or simple. I have always raised a dog from a puppy and never had any such difficulties and I am 62 years old and have owned dogs all of my life. The Pit Bull not being neutered and being allowed to go around impregnating other non-spayed female "whatevevers" is an epidemic in our town. I will do my very best to undo the craziness that has been inflicted on this dog but I can tell you that it needs to stop somehow. Pit Bulls are truly becoming our ignorant society's mascot of tough, hard city animals.
This brings tears to my eyes because I've felt the sadness and desperation of the dogs that go through the shelters and most often the misunderstood 'ferocious' breeds are the ones going down. NONE should be put down if they're healthy and adoptable, if not adoptable then a safe haven needs to be established. We are sharing the planet with these lovely souls who love us so unconditionally and add so much to our lives, we need to be responsible to find a humane solution to this problem WE HUMANS created. All too often we (the human race) act like toddlers that create a mess and walk away for the grownups to figure it out and clean it up. WE ARE THE GROWNUPS stewarding this great planet and all it's inhabitants. Respect and compassion to all.
I understand what the artist is trying to accomplish with the museum concept. However, better to find funding of one million or more for no kill shelters throughout the country. A museum would begin the awareness process, but funds are needed to protect and preserve the lives of dogs now.
Now I'm going to Pet Finder. Some of my best friends are from there.
I always said that the Good Lord got it backwards.......Dogs should live into their 70's and many humans shouldn't live past the age of 12 LOL. Dogs are more loyal, loving and honest than most of the two legged ones I know.
