Where the Genuine Emerges

The Story Booth

One conversation about a turning point that shaped not what you’ve done — but who you’ve become. An experienced listener holds the space. A circle of witnesses sits in silence. And from that single exchange, a story emerges — not extracted, but offered. No writing skill needed. You bring the truth; we bring the craft.

Not an interview. A practice in collective presence.

From the Booth

Each of these stories began as a single conversation — a storyteller, a listener, and a circle of witnesses. Here’s what emerged.

More stories emerging — including Mama Wakanyi and Ruth “The Love Lady” Pittard.

From Conversation to Ripple

One conversation becomes a story that travels outward. Here’s how it unfolds.

1

A Story Surfaces

You share or someone nominates you. A curator reviews it and matches you with an experienced listener.

2

The Booth Opens

A 45–60 minute conversation — storyteller, listener, and witnesses. It begins with silence.

3

Story Takes Shape

A first draft emerges from the transcript. An editor refines it. You approve only what rings true.

4

Ripples Travel

Three Roles, One Conversation

Every Story Booth conversation is held by three people — each contributing something different. Think of it as the difference between watching a documentary and sitting in the room when someone tells you what really happened.

The Storyteller

Someone whose lived experience holds a turning point — a moment that shaped not what you’ve done, but who you’ve become. You don’t need to be a writer. Just someone willing to be known.

“You don’t need to prepare anything formal — just come as you are. Our listener will guide the conversation.”

The Listener

Grounded in the art of compassionate presence. You’re not extracting content — you’re holding space for the genuine to emerge. A deeply rewarding volunteer practice.

“A deeply experienced listener produces a conversation that practically writes itself.”

The Witness

You’re not an audience — you’re part of what makes the story possible. Your silent, attentive presence shapes the conversation as much as the questions asked. Video on, heart open.

“The story is shaped not just by the questions asked, but by the quality of presence in the room.”
What Makes This Different

Four Levels of Listening

Most interviews operate at Level 1 or 2. The Story Booth invites its listeners to hold space at Level 3 and 4 — where the story that wants to emerge can find its voice.

1

“I already know that.”

Downloading

Listening that confirms what you already believe. Nothing new enters.

2

“Oh, look at that!”

Factual

Listening for what differs from what you know. Good science. Open mind.

3

“I know how you feel.”

Empathic

Perception shifts from your world into theirs. You forget your agenda and begin to see through someone else’s eyes. Heart-to-heart. This is where you sense what someone means before the words take form.

4

“I’m no longer the same person I was when we started.”

Generative

Beyond empathy into emergence. The listener’s presence creates a clearing where something new can come into being — for the storyteller, for the witnesses, and for the listener. At the end, everyone in the room has changed.

This is why every Story Booth begins with silence — not as ritual, but as a shift in the place from which we listen. The process itself becomes a ceremony.

The Courage to Lead with Love

The storyteller goes first, offering truth in a culture that rewards performance.

The Art of Attention

The listener practices presence in a culture addicted to distraction.

The Discipline of Witness

The witness holds space without needing to comment, fix, or consume.

“There is something in every one of you that waits, listens for the sound of the genuine.” — Howard Thurman

Your Turning Point Is Waiting

Somewhere in your life is a moment too nuanced for a headline, too personal for a stage, and too important to go unshared. The Story Booth is where that moment finds its voice.

Nominate Someone

Know someone whose turning point could ripple outward? We’ll reach out to them with care.
