7歳くらいの頃、家の前庭にアヒルのつがいがいました。アヒルはパンが好きだと知っていたので、飛び去ってしまう前に餌をあげようと決めました。当時は知りませんでしたが、この2羽のアヒルは、今の私を形成する上で最も大きな影響を与えた存在の一つとなりました。
最初に訪れてから約1週間後、アヒルたちはまた私の庭にやって来ました。近所の湖は家からそれほど近くなかったので、不思議に思いました。でも、アヒルにできることといえばそれしかなかったので、また餌をあげました。
それから1、2ヶ月間、彼らは毎日戻ってきて、餌が欲しい時は玄関まで来てガーガー鳴くことも覚えました。その後は、週に1、2回、1羽だけになりました。この状態がどれくらい続いたのかは正確には分かりませんが、ある日の大嵐の後、2羽とも私の家の前庭にやって来ました。
今回は何かがひどく間違っていた
二羽がまた一緒にいるのを見て興奮したので、餌を多めに持って行きました。しかし、彼らはいつもと様子が違い、興奮しているようでした。私が外に出ても、いつものようにクワクワ鳴き続けるのをやめませんでした。それどころか、クワクワと鳴く回数が増えたのです。最初に小さなパンを投げると、オスはそれを拾い上げて私に投げ返し、また必死にクワクワ鳴き始めました。そこで、いつものように後ずさりするかどうか見てみようと、数歩近づきましたが、今回はメスだけが動いていました。私は戸惑いましたが、彼らの様子は、以前見た映画で、動物が誰かに付いて来てほしいと頼んでいる場面を思い出させました。私は家に戻り、母に事情を説明し、彼らについて行ってもいいか許可を得ました。
私が外に戻ると、彼らは庭の隅に移動していました。どうやら私が彼らを諦めたと思ったようです。ドアが閉まる音に彼らは気づき、オスはずっとクワクワと鳴きながら私のところまで走って戻ってきました。私は彼らを庭の隅まで追いかけ、道を下り、角を曲がり、通りを渡ると、湖が見えてきました。その時、メスは湖の近くに飛んで降りましたが、オスは私を歩いて連れて行きました。私たちが湖に着くと、2羽とも湖の端にある雨水溝に行き、クワクワと鳴きながら飛び込み始めました。私は近づいて下を見ると、衝撃の光景が目に飛び込んできました。7羽のアヒルの子が、約2.4メートルほどの深さの溝の底で、ただ私たちを見上げているのが見えたのです。
私は助けを求めて走った
何か助けなければと思ったので、アヒルたちにすぐに戻ると伝え、走って家に戻りました。父を説得して助けてもらうのに10分ほどかかりましたが、父は長い竿に付けた釣り網を持ってきて一緒に来てくれました。7匹をすぐに引き上げてくれましたが、もう一匹は下にいたそうです。網を避けるために、底のパイプに何度も入ったり出たりを繰り返していたそうです。
私は通りを横切り、丘を駆け下りて、パイプの出口を探しました。見つけたときには、子ガモはパイプの端にいましたが、私は怖がらせてパイプをくぐらせ、父の網のある場所まで連れて帰りました。子ガモを捕まえるのに20分ほどかかりましたが、ついに捕まえることができました。子ガモが外に出るとすぐに、親ガモたちは子ガモを排水口から連れ出し、様子を見始めました。ちょうど夕食の時間だったので、私たちは家に戻りました。

翌日、玄関先でまたクワクワという音が聞こえました。庭にいた2羽のアヒルと8羽のヒナたちの様子を見に行きました。触るのは良くないことは分かっていたので、ただ眺めていました。大変な目に遭っていたにもかかわらず、皆元気そうでした。数分後、彼らは皆庭を下り、湖とは反対方向の道を歩き始めました。
私は彼らに二度と会うことはなかったが、彼らが再び私に子供たちを見せてくれたのは、感謝と別れを告げるためだったとしか思えない。

I definitely think they were saying "thank you and good-bye" since I had a similar experience with a robin who nested in my carport and had two babies. Every day when I went out I sang the same little two-measure tune so they would know it was me and not be afraid. The chicks were almost grown, when one night some animal got into their nest -- I heard it, but by the time I got there everyone was gone. In the morning I found one of the chicks dead and the mother robin and other chick were gone. I was afraid they were all dead. But the next day, the mother brought the chick, who still could only fly two or three feet at a time back to show me. Then they left, and I didn't see them again. mj
I always can apply the daily good readings in my life. The stories are thought-provoking and help us to take time to smell the roses.

I love this story!!! It just shows that animals give us unconditional love and usually don't ask for anything in return. But these ducks instinctively knew you were a kind and loving person who would help them. You most certainly are blessed!!
