gan newid ffurf, a daeth siâp ei gorff newydd fel corff Gwas y Neidr. Wrth dderbyn yr her i brofi ei bŵer a'i allu hudolus, collodd y Ddraig ei phŵer.”

Roedd y dyn yn hoffi'r syniad y byddai hubris y ddraig yn arwain at ffurf llai pwerus ond hardd. Ac eto yn ei ffordd ei hun, mae'r gwas neidr yn rhyw fath o fod hudolus, yn gallu—fel y mae gwyddonwyr wedi dangos—i gampau anhygoel, gyda math o ddeallusrwydd na fyddwn ni fel bodau dynol byth yn ei ddeall yn llawn, yn ôl pob tebyg. A hanfod sy'n ymddangos yn swyno pob math o bobl, o entomolegwyr i awduron natur a phlant bach yn chwarae mewn pyllau.

Er bod mecaneg sut mae gwas neidr yn “gweithio” wedi swyno gwyddonwyr ac arweinwyr milwrol, mae agweddau eraill ar y pryf wedi bod yn chwilfrydig i fodau dynol o duedd fwy cyfriniol ers tro byd. Datgelodd ymchwil y dyn fod gan weision neidr ystyr arbennig mewn diwylliannau ledled y byd ac ar draws amser. Mae rhai pobloedd wedi parchu’r gwas neidr, mae eraill wedi ei ofni. Wrth gwrs, mae hynny’n dweud mwy amdanom ni fel bodau dynol na’r pryf.

Yr hyn a’i trawodd fel rhywbeth rhyfedd iawn oedd bod diwylliannau Asiaidd a Brodorol America wedi cysylltu’r gwas neidr yn draddodiadol â rhinweddau cadarnhaol—ffyniant, cytgord, hapusrwydd, lwc dda, a phurdeb—tra bod nifer o gymdeithasau Ewropeaidd yn ystyried bod ganddo natur niweidiol a hyd yn oed ddemonig, gan ei alw’n bethau fel anifail y gwrachod, nodwydd y diafol, a gwas y neidr. O ystyried ei wreiddiau Ewropeaidd ei hun, roedd yn teimlo bod y cysylltiadau olaf yn peri pryder iddo. Beth allai gyfrif am weledigaethau mor dywyll, mor wahanol i’r daioni a ddychmygai pobloedd eraill? A allai fod yn natur eu crefyddau, eu credoau ysbrydol?

Gwnaeth ymchwil y dyn yn glir, er gwaethaf eu holl wahaniaethau, fod llawer o ddiwylliannau'n cysylltu'r gwas neidr â newid. Nid yw hynny ynddo'i hun yn syndod, gan fod metamorffosis yn ganolog i'w fywyd (a bywyd pryfed eraill). Ond os oedd yn deall ei ffynonellau'n gywir, mae'r math o newid y mae gwas neidr yn ei gynrychioli yn bennaf o fath mewnol: symudiad i ffwrdd o'r rhithwelediadau diwylliannol neu bersonol sy'n arwain ein bywydau ond mewn gwirionedd yn cuddio'r hyn sydd fwyaf hanfodol neu "real," a thuag at ddealltwriaeth ddyfnach a chliriach - gweledigaeth gliriach, gellid dweud - o'r hunan, bywyd, a'r byd, gan gynnwys ei agweddau anweledig neu'r hyn y byddai rhai'n ei alw'n "anweledigion".

Mewn geiriau eraill, y newid y mae gwas y neidr yn ei gynrychioli yw symudiad tuag at fwy o ymwybyddiaeth, doethineb ac eglurder. Tuag at ddilysrwydd.

Ystyriodd y dyn hynny i gyd yn galonogol. Efallai fod ei gyfarfyddiadau anarferol â'r gweision neidr yn arwydd ei fod yn symud i'r cyfeiriad cywir, tuag at hunan mwy dilys.

Roedd yn ymddangos bod y dyn yn mynd trwy ryw fath o newid mewnol. Roedd wedi dechrau cwestiynu a herio llawer o “wirioneddau” prif ffrwd ei ddiwylliant, ei werthoedd, ei dybiaethau a’i gytundebau yn fwy difrifol; yr hyn yr ydym ni Americanwyr modern, uwch-dechnolegol, sy’n gaeth i’r Rhyngrwyd, yn meddwl ein bod yn ei wybod am y byd a’r cosmos ehangach (neu’r “greadigaeth”) a’n lle ynddo. Teimlai ei hun yn agor i fyny i wahanol ffyrdd o adnabod y byd a bod ynddo; a’r hyn a ddychmygodd oedd realiti mwy, y tu hwnt i’r hyn y gall gwyddoniaeth neu sefydliadau crefyddol ei egluro. Neu hyd yn oed ei ystyried yn bosibl.

Y ddelwedd a oedd yn dal i ailadrodd oedd un ohono ef ei hun wedi'i osod ar ryw drothwy neu ddatblygiad, er ei fod ar adegau yn meddwl tybed a allai fod yn wynebu mwy o chwalfa. Ac er ei fod yn poeni ei fod weithiau'n cymryd pethau (a'i hun) yn rhy ddifrifol, roedd hefyd yn teimlo ei fod weithiau'n dal ei hun yn ôl, wedi'i boeni gan amheuon, ansicrwydd, hunan-farn.

Am llanast dryslyd ydw i, meddyliodd. Ond dyna sy'n digwydd pan fydd pethau'n cael eu hysgwyd. Yna, gyda gwên ac efallai hyd yn oed ychydig o chwerthin, daeth meddwl cyfarwydd arall ato: Dw i'n meddwl gormod.

Yn y diwedd, ni allai'r dyn fod yn sicr beth oedd ystyr mynediad y gweision neidr i'w fywyd. A pham roedd rhaid iddo "olygu" unrhyw beth o gwbl? Ond roedd yn eithaf siŵr nad oedd wedi digwydd trwy siawns yn unig. A pha bynnag ystyron neu symbolaeth y gallem ni fodau dynol eu cysylltu â gweision neidr, yr hyn a oedd yn ymddangos yn gliriaf - ac yn bwysicaf - iddo oedd eu bod wedi denu ei sylw ac wedi'i gyffroi rywsut, efallai hyd yn oed wedi cyfathrebu ag ef ar lefel na allai ei deall eto. A hyn: roedd rhyw borth neu orchudd wedi agor, er mai dim ond am gyfnod byr ydoedd, ac roedd wedi camu drwyddo. Mewn rhyw ffordd ryfedd ac anesboniadwy, roedd ei fyd wedi'i ehangu. Ac onid yw hynny'n dweud llawer?

Felly dyna lle mae'r stori'n dod i ben. Ac eithrio hyn: fel y gallech fod wedi dyfalu, fi yw'r dyn gwas neidr. Ac mae'r hyn rydw i wedi'i rannu mor agos at y gwir ag y gallaf ei gael, o ystyried yr hyn rydw i'n ei wybod a'i deimlo am ddigwyddiad y gwas neidr a'r hyn rydw i wedi'i ddysgu ers y dyddiau hwyr yn yr haf hynny—a chydnabod bod yna bob amser fwy o haenau i'w harchwilio.

Gallwch fod yn siŵr y byddaf yn rhoi mwy o sylw i weision neidr ac yn cael fy atgoffa pa mor ychydig, mewn gwirionedd, yr ydym ni fel bodau dynol yn ei wybod am y byd (a ni ein hunain) er gwaethaf popeth yr ydym wedi'i ddysgu. A minnau, am un, byddaf yn dathlu'r dirgelwch.

O, mae un darn arall i'r stori barhaus hon y mae angen i mi ei rhannu, profiad diweddar roeddwn i bron wedi'i anghofio, er nad wyf yn gwybod sut mae hynny'n bosibl. Un bore wrth i mi grwydro trwy'r lle niwlog hwnnw rhwng cwsg a deffro, cefais naill ai freuddwyd neu weledigaeth, lle'r oedd rhannau toredig corff y gwas neidr a gefais yn fy iard - y rhannau hynny a gasglwyd o hyd mewn blwch gwyn bach, wedi'i osod ar silff yn fy ystafell wely - yn ymuno â'i gilydd eto i ail-greu'r creadur cyflawn. Ymhlith y nifer o ddehongliadau posibl, dyma ddaeth ataf gyntaf: dychweliad i gyfanrwydd. A dyna ddigon am y tro.

I had a magical encounter of a different sort. On an afternoon hike to a hill not too far from me in NH, I came to an expansive field with hundreds, if not thousands, of dragonflies zooming back and forth over the tall weeds and wildflowers, the sun glistening on their wings. The air was filled with them. What a breathtaking thing to witness! I have seen much smaller versions in my backyard -- but maybe only a dozen or fewer.

Oh my! What a piece of writing and sharing about mystery. "A hinged and serrated lower jaw" … only to end that paragraph with the part where I chortled — "a pollywog’s worst nightmare." Then on to more philosophical wonderings in the mythic story of the dragon’s hubris transforming him/her into a dragonfly but still magnificent. And then the science bit about flying and still seeing us when they have passed us by; and that without a rear view mirror. My personal story is a moment I’ll never forget. It happened somewhere between a swamp area and a quiet stretch of ocean beach just north of the 49th latitude in Western Canada. It was a warm, late spring day. Not a soul there except myself, birds and the "invisibles." First I heard a thrumming that was not quite a wing beat coming up behind me. It was actually thousands of gossamer wing beats in unison. Very soon I was in the middle of a throng of hundreds if not thousands of blue darners flying at my head level and slightl... [View Full Comment]

Anna, wow, what an experience you share! Yes, so many questions after such a wonder-filled experience. I love (and relate to) your statement, "I was outside of thought and simply in a moment of revelation." And yes to celebrating (and embracing) the mystery!

AWESOME!!! So much to learn from the most simple and touching experiences in our relationship with nature! As I age and ponder, I become more aware and at peace with varied life experiences with parts of nature that I ounce feared. Thank you for sharing your personal insights of the blue dragonfly...

Barb, yes, "so much to learn." And I, like you, am becoming "more aware and at peace" as I grow older (and, I hope, grow in wisdom as well).

Thank you for the dragonfly story. I read the whole thing, though it took more than one sitting. I like that the dragonflies were catching his attention! That's how I thought/ felt about the baby squirrel. He definitely got my attention, climbing up and sitting on my bicycle seat and staring at me! Asking for help. That was quite a surprise. Like the dragonfly, needing help, but also giving so much. I also liked how it raised questions of our relationship with other life forms. I am very much into that enquiry myself, wanting to honor other beings, but at the same time I am eating meat that often comes from a place of cruelty to the animals whose flesh I am eating. TIme to think about this again!

Nancy, thanks for your own story. And yes, our human relationships with other beings/life forms is complicated. Being open to new possibilities is important, I believe.

I loved reading your beautiful story. I also have had a magical encounter with a tiny electric blue dragonfly in the ti-tree lakes in northern N.S.W. in Australia one summer afternoon. I was standing in the lake and saw a tiny dragonfly floating on the water. I thought it was dead and picked it up. I placed it on my palm and realised it was still alive. It took a few minutes for the dragonfly to recover, stood up on its tiny legs, primping and preening itself, shaking its wings. After a few minutes it stopped and looked at me, gazing at me - and me looking at it - in my palm close to my face. It was as if time stopped - me staring into its tiny extraterresstial, eyes with the tiny black centre - we became one - I don't know how long we were connected but it was extraordinary, then it just flew away. But I was changed forever. It was an amazing encounter - and have felt a strong, loving connection to dragonflies ever since. I see them everywhere. When visiting that lake a year lat... I so love this. I wrote(in my book A Blessing of Toads) a similar/though not similar, experience of rescuing a dragonfly along a roadside in Maine. It returned to me the next morning after the eve I released it. Such magic. I must relate that in Cahuila myths the dragonfly will only land on those people who are pure of heart. They have a song, Ush Kana, that is used to call them down from the sky. I did this, and the dragonfly came.

Sharon, thanks for sharing your own experiences and understandings taken from "Cahuila myths." To "call" dragonflies from the sky--and have the animal respond--seems mystical indeed. I will check out your book, thanks for that information.

Beautiful story! When I was young (about 50 years ago) I used to play with "automatic writing"! And a sentence came through about dragonflies that has always stayed with me and that I never fully understood: "Dragonflies seem drastically treacherous, knowing only the solitude of becoming."

I am so glad to have read this. Dragonflies have always attracted me. But the main pleasure for me, in this writing, is the reflective quality of the author's experience, even his admissions of forgetting and other human foibles. I'm grateful to Daily Good for making this available for reading.

Thank you Bill for sharing your meaningful encounters with dragonflies. I too have had magical & mystical moments with these 'fairies' including in a parking lot outside of Nairobi Kenya when I was suddenly surrounded by 10 or more of these mystical creatures just after a Storytelling Performance. Just lovely. Often dragonflies find me when I'm in times of transition or challenge with a choice. I do my best to listen. 🙏

How refreshing to come upon this story, just this morning on coming back from deep inner space, where I gently touched a somewhat sperical blue orb like a water balloon, and hoping it did not hurt it to do so, and "getting" an understanding of "no, it tickles". I chuckle, knowing full well we've been put to sleep like Rip Van Winkle, and waking up is inevitable. I chuckle to know I don't take offense that many still sleeping would snicker, if they saw me this morning, tickling a blue sphere, and escorting a granddaddy-long- leg outside from within a large Mason jar to be free to scuttle among the two-inch wild tulips I planted and forgot about until they emerged, like bright stars awakening , remembering they have a coronosphere turned on. My cup fills full with your sharing.
