Στη Γη, μόνο ένα κουταλάκι του γλυκού αστέρι νετρονίων
θα ζύγιζε έξι δισεκατομμύρια τόνους. Έξι δισεκατομμύρια τόνοι
ισούται με το συλλογικό βάρος κάθε ζώου
στη γη. Συμπεριλαμβανομένων των εντόμων. Φορές τρεις.
Έξι δισεκατομμύρια τόνοι ακούγονται ακατόρθωτα
μέχρι να σκεφτώ πώς είναι να καταπιείς τη θλίψη-
μόνο ένα κουταλάκι του γλυκού και θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να είχε καταναλώσει
ένα αστέρι νετρονίων. Πόσο πυκνό είναι,
πώς κουβαλάει μέσα του τη μνήμη της κατάρρευσης.
Πόσο δύσκολο είναι να κινηθείς τότε.
Πόσο αδύνατο να πιστέψει κανείς κάτι τέτοιο
μπορούσε να σηκώσει αυτό το βάρος.
Υπάρχουν πολλοί λόγοι για να συμπεριφέρεστε ο ένας στον άλλον
με μεγάλη τρυφερότητα. Το ένα είναι
το απόλυτο θαύμα που είμαστε εδώ μαζί
σε έναν πλανήτη που περιβάλλεται από αστέρια που πεθαίνουν.
Το ένα είναι ότι δεν μπορούμε να δούμε τι
οποιοσδήποτε άλλος έχει καταπιεί.
